Full Job Description

FERNY is building a modern internal technology organization to support its healthcare operations, clinical teams, and continued growth. We are seeking a Level 3 Healthcare IT Systems & Security Engineer to join our internal IT team and help design, implement, secure, and support FERNY’s technology environment.

This is not a ticket queue. You are the whole internal IT function — you decide how it gets built, and you build it.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role for someone who can own complex technical work, communicate comfortably with executives and clinical leadership, and turn business needs into reliable technology solutions. The ideal candidate is practical, accountable, security-minded, and comfortable using ChatGPT to accelerate research, documentation, automation, and problem-solving while protecting confidential information.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Help build and mature FERNY’s internal IT function and operating standards.
Lead FERNY’s Microsoft 365 modernization, including Entra ID, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, MFA, Conditional Access, and identity lifecycle management.
Support the transition from Google Workspace, Google Drive, and Slack to Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Teams.
Deploy and manage Intune, Autopilot, endpoint configuration, device compliance, patching, application deployment, and workstation standards.
Implement endpoint detection and response, email protection, vulnerability management, backup, identity threat detection and response, and security monitoring.
Assist with network documentation, segmentation, firewall/VPN/access reviews, wireless standards, and secure connectivity across FERNY locations.
Support healthcare technology environments and coordinate technology enablement for clinical systems and related applications.
Help FERNY achieve and maintain HIPAA-aligned security, privacy, documentation, and remediation practices.
Perform vulnerability, PHI, configuration, and access reviews; track remediation through completion.
Build accurate documentation for assets, users, systems, vendors, network topology, configurations, procedures, and recovery processes.
Develop runbooks, onboarding/offboarding procedures, change-management practices, incident-response procedures, and executive-ready technology reports.
Participate in backup validation, restore testing, business continuity, and disaster-recovery preparation.
Work directly with FERNY leadership, clinical stakeholders, vendors, and the CTO to prioritize work and communicate risks, decisions, and progress.
Provide Level 3 escalation support and mentor team members as FERNY’s internal IT organization grows.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

5+ years of progressive systems engineering, infrastructure, security engineering, or senior IT experience.
Strong experience administering Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and endpoint security platforms.
Experience with Windows administration, PowerShell, networking, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs, wireless systems, and troubleshooting.
Experience with migrations, endpoint deployments, identity management, patching, monitoring, backup, and security remediation.
Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and own deliverables from planning through completion.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks and recommendations to C-level and clinical audiences.
Strong documentation habits and attention to detail.
Sound judgment when using ChatGPT and other AI tools, including the ability to validate outputs and protect PHI, PII, credentials, and confidential company information.
Healthcare IT, HIPAA, PHI protection, or regulated-environment experience is strongly preferred.

NICE TO HAVE

Microsoft security and compliance tooling, Defender, email security, SIEM or ITDR platforms, RMM tools, and SaaS backup.
SharePoint information architecture and governance.
Healthcare applications, EMR ecosystems, or clinical workflow support.
UniFi or comparable networking platforms.
Vendor management, technical project delivery, and executive-level reporting.
Relevant Microsoft, security, networking, or cloud certifications.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

Google Workspace migration is completed with validated data, access, communications, training, and user adoption.
Supported computers are inventoried, Entra-joined, Intune-managed, encrypted, patched, and monitored.
MFA, Conditional Access, privileged-access controls, and onboarding/offboarding processes are operational and documented.
FERNY’s HIPAA cybersecurity remediation work has documented owners, evidence, exceptions, priorities, and completion status.
Microsoft 365 and VoIP services are stable, secure, documented, and supportable.
Backup and recovery procedures are tested and supported by documented evidence.
Escalated incidents are resolved promptly, and recurring problems decline over time.
FERNY’s internal IT team has repeatable processes, accurate documentation, clear standards, and measurable service improvements.
