Landscape Design Services, Inc. is a team of over 190 professionals delivering landscape architecture, construction, and maintenance services at an exceptional level. We are located near Lake Michigan between Holland and Grand Haven.
We are seeking an experienced Landscape Construction professional who can turn design plans into organized, high-quality field execution. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands hardscape installation, can coordinate multiple crews and job-site needs, and knows how to keep projects moving safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
What You’ll Do
- Review landscape plans, blueprints, work orders, and project assignments with the Division Designer and translate them into a clear field-production plan.
- Organize crews, assign responsibilities, and allocate workloads across the crew leaders you supervise.
- Confirm that crews have the equipment, materials, and job information needed before and throughout each project.
- Lead hardscape layout and installation, including patios, retaining walls, walkways, and similar features.
- Operate, or direct the safe operation of, skid steers, excavators, and other heavy equipment as needed.
- Serve as the primary Landscape Design Services contact for clients on site and coordinate communication among the client, designer, crew leaders, and crew members.
- Monitor workmanship, safety, job progress, route efficiency, and production performance against quoted hours; identify concerns and recommend improvements.
- Ensure labor hours, materials, equipment use, and other required information are accurately recorded on job work orders, and oversee crew leaders’ recordkeeping.
- Inspect completed and in-progress work, resolve routine field issues, and promptly communicate concerns to the Division Designer and appropriate project stakeholders.
- Train and support new crew leaders, help field employees work through job-related concerns, and report injuries or unresolved personnel concerns to Human Resources.
What You’ll Bring
- At least 5 years of hands-on landscape construction experience.
- Strong hardscape layout and installation experience, including patios, retaining walls, walkways, and similar features.
- Proven experience operating skid steers and excavators.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, work orders, material lists, and written or graphic instructions in English.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to organize people, equipment, materials, and changing priorities.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a positive, team-oriented approach and responding well to feedback.
- Reliable attendance and the flexibility to work a varied schedule, including Saturdays and extended hours during peak season.
- Valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability and willingness to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Michigan MCN certification.
- Related college coursework.
- Bilingual communication skills in Spanish and English.
Schedule, Travel, and Work Environment
This is a field-based role that begins and ends each workday at Landscape Design Services in West Olive. Company transportation is provided to and from client job sites. The schedule varies with production needs and weather; peak season typically includes 50-60-hour workweeks and Saturdays as needed.
Work is performed in outdoor job-site and repair/maintenance shop environments in varying weather conditions. The position includes exposure to moving equipment, fumes, airborne particles, noise, hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, and confined spaces, and requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 75 pounds.
- Regularly climb, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, reach, use hands and fingers, and work above shoulder height.
- Safely operate vehicles, machinery, tools, and industrial equipment.
- Communicate clearly, read and understand job information, and use the visual and hearing abilities necessary to safely perform field work.
