Position Summary
The Evening Maintenance Engineer is responsible for maintaining the safe, efficient operation of the hotel's building systems during evening hours, when Front Desk and Housekeeping rely on Engineering to independently resolve guest-impacting issues with minimal direct oversight. This role closes out open work orders from earlier shifts, proactively identifies deficiencies through routine property walks, monitors critical systems throughout the shift, and ensures a clean, organized, and fully stocked engineering shop is handed off to the following shift.
Essential Job Functions — Evening Shift Priorities
- Reviews and completes outstanding work orders from earlier shifts whenever operationally possible.
- Prioritizes guest-impacting issues to support Front Desk and Housekeeping.
- Performs routine property inspections and preventive maintenance rounds, identifying and correcting minor deficiencies before they become guest concerns, safety hazards, or equipment failures.
- Monitors critical building systems throughout the shift and responds appropriately to any operational issues.
- Uses slower periods productively by completing preventive maintenance, organizing the engineering shop, cleaning work areas, restocking supplies, and addressing routine maintenance items.
- Accurately documents completed work, ongoing repairs, material needs, and pending tasks within the CMMS and engineering shift log, ensuring Engineering leadership and oncoming staff receive a clear and complete shift handoff. Immediately notifies Engineering leadership of emergencies, life-safety concerns, or critical operational issues requiring immediate attention.
General Engineering Duties
- Performs general repairs, corrective maintenance, and routine preventive maintenance throughout the hotel while maintaining established quality, safety, and operational standards.
- Responds promptly to maintenance requests in Guest Rooms, Food & Beverage outlets, Public Areas, and Back-of-House spaces while maintaining hotel service standards and minimizing operational disruption.
- Reviews the daily engineering shift log, CMMS work order system, guest complaints, and assigned preventive maintenance tasks to prioritize and complete daily responsibilities efficiently.
- Performs event and meeting room set-ups, furniture moves, and operational support for hotel functions, activations, and special events while ensuring timely completion and minimal disruption to hotel operations.
- Expedites the light bulb replacement program.
- Maintains organized engineering storage areas, assigned service carts, tools, and inventory, ensuring all equipment is clean, properly stocked, and ready to support daily operations, preventive maintenance, guest service, and emergency response.
- Provides professional, courteous, and timely assistance to guests by addressing engineering-related requests and concerns while delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining hotel standards.
- Communicates the status of maintenance requests, estimated completion times, and operational updates to the appropriate departments and Engineering leadership, ensuring clear expectations and timely follow-up.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe engineering shop, mechanical rooms, electrical/telecommunication rooms, storage areas, service carts, and workspaces, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained, stored, and readily accessible.
- Takes ownership of assigned maintenance requests by following through to completion, communicating delays or unforeseen conditions, and ensuring work is completed safely, professionally, and in accordance with hotel standards.
- Exercises sound judgment when maintaining the hotel's building systems by prioritizing safety, reliability, operational efficiency, and responsible stewardship of hotel resources. Identifies practical, long-term solutions that maximize asset life while minimizing unnecessary costs whenever appropriate.
- Performs repairs in occupied guest rooms and public areas with professionalism, discretion, and respect for guest privacy. Protects hotel finishes, furnishings, and guest belongings while maintaining hotel service standards and minimizing disruption to the guest experience.
- Assists in ensuring that all hotel systems meet the standards established by local, state, and federal regulating agencies.
- Performs all work in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, hotel policies, and established safety practices. Exercises good judgment by recognizing when a repair exceeds their authority, technical expertise, or available resources, and communicates those situations promptly to Engineering leadership.
- Promptly communicates significant maintenance concerns, operational disruptions, life-safety issues, vendor coordination needs, and unforeseen conditions affecting hotel operations to Engineering leadership. Provides timely updates until the issue is resolved or appropriately transitioned to the next shift.
- Has basic knowledge of the hotel's plumbing, heating/boiler, electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, fire safety, sprinkler, lighting, and communication systems.
- Assists with floor/room inspections as assigned.
- Helps monitor energy consumption and waste.
- Maintains equipment and supplies.
- Uses tools safely and correctly.
- Reviews the evening work order queue and handoff log for job assignments at the start of the shift.
- Is completely familiar with hotel emergency procedures and able to respond quickly and accurately during an actual emergency, notifying all appropriate personnel.
- Notifies immediate supervisors promptly and fully of all problems or unusual matters of significance.
- Is polite, friendly, and helpful to guests, management, and fellow employees.
- Attends all appropriate hotel meetings and training sessions.
- Maintains cleanliness and excellent condition of equipment and work area.
- Executes emergency procedures in accordance with hotel standards.
- Complies with safety regulations and procedures.
- Complies with hotel policies and rules.
- Recycles whenever possible.
- Remains current with hotel information and changes.
- Complies with hotel uniform and grooming standards.
- Demonstrates ownership by thinking beyond assigned work orders. Routinely identifies opportunities to improve the property's appearance, safety, reliability, and operational efficiency. Brings recommendations forward and works collaboratively with Engineering leadership to implement preventive and long-term solutions.
- Completes any other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent and/or experience in a hotel or related field required.
- At least two years of progressive experience in a hotel or related field preferred.
- Trade school and/or college coursework in related fields is helpful.
- Flexible and long hours sometimes required; must be able to work independently during evening hours with limited direct supervision.
- Heavy work — exerting more than 75 pounds of force.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, with all levels of employees and guests in an attentive, friendly, courteous, and service-oriented manner.
- Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying concerns raised by guests.

- Specialized knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electricity, and equipment mechanics.
- Communication skills are utilized a significant amount of time when interacting with other supervisors, hotel staff, and guests.
- Speaking, reading, and writing in English to document or record all tasks completed, to order supplies, to receive instructions for the day, and/or to read equipment repair manuals.
- Must be able to push up to 75 pounds.
