PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Assistant Thrift Store Manager is responsible for assisting the Thrift Store Manager with the day-to-day operational management of the Homer Thrift Store, including but not limited to staff and volunteer supervision; team building; customer service; merchandise pricing; financial oversight and cash handling procedures; donations processing; and visual merchandising. The Assistant Manager will also ensure the constant availability of quality items for sale within a clean, well-organized shop that appeals to customers.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Respectful, welcoming, and friendly customer service.
- Serve as acting Thrift Store Manager when assigned or as needed when the Manager is out of the office or away for vacation, and/or on sick leave.
- Abide by confidentiality required by SPHH.
- Assist in the development and implementation of written procedures for store operations, including opening and closing the store; procedures for accepting, sorting, pricing donations; security procedures for staff and volunteers, handling of cash, and other relevant procedures as needed.
- Supervise the processing of donated items; manage the rotation of items and the disposal of donated items in a timely fashion. Processes include sorting, hanging, tagging, steaming, displaying, and disposing of donated items. The Assistant Manager is also in charge of pricing items.
- Ensure that all sales transactions (cash, credit cards) are handled properly and in line with Homer Thrift’s cash handling procedures and credit card compliance standards.
- Maintaining clean work areas and safe working conditions within the Thrift Store building, grounds and storage area (Conex).
- Assisting with scheduling and training staff and volunteers and documentation of volunteer hours.
- Maintain current knowledge of agency policies and procedures as they relate to personnel; monitor staff for adherence to policies and procedures.
- Participate in staff meetings and trainings as needed.
- Assists with other work responsibilities as assigned by the Thrift Store Manager and/or Executive Director.

Preferred:
- 2 or more years retail supervision or management experience.
- Knowledge and/or experience with Square POS machines.
- Demonstrated skills and working knowledge of computers, internet, Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Excel and Word.

Working Conditions: Periodic exposure to situations where individuals may be a danger to themselves or others. Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk, or hear; use hands, and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands, and arms.
- Lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to be on feet most of the workday except for breaks and lunch.
Machines and Equipment Used: Standard office and retail sales equipment and household cleaning tools (vacuum cleaners, etc.).
Relationship With Other People: Cooperates and interacts with all SPHH’s staff and volunteers and community service agencies with dignity and tact. Will not engage in intimate relationships with a person seeking or receiving services from SPHH. Models nonviolent behavior.
