Full Job Description

Job Title: Construction Accountant

Location: Ithaca, NY
Reports To: Controller

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Construction Accountant to manage core accounting functions with a strong emphasis on Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable within a construction environment. This role is critical to maintaining accurate job cost reporting, cash flow management, and compliance with construction-specific accounting requirements. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on construction accounting experience and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, project-driven setting.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Receivable

Prepare and process customer billings, including progress billings, AIA/G702-703 applications, and change orders
Track and reconcile contract values, retainage, and approved change orders
Monitor accounts receivable aging and follow up on collections
Coordinate with project managers to resolve billing discrepancies
Prepare lien waivers and other required documentation for payment

Accounts Payable

Process vendor and subcontractor invoices accurately and timely
Match invoices to purchase orders, subcontracts, and job cost codes
Manage subcontractor payments, including retainage tracking
Collect and maintain W-9s, certificates of insurance, and compliance documentation
Prepare and issue checks and electronic payments

Job Cost & Construction Accounting

Maintain accurate job cost records and coding
Reconcile job cost reports and assist with project cost forecasting
Support month-end close activities related to construction projects
Assist Controller with work-in-progress (WIP) schedules as needed
Ensure compliance with construction accounting best practices and internal controls

General Accounting & Support

Assist with audits, reviews, and financial reporting as required
Collaborate with project management and operations teams
Maintain organized accounting records and documentation
Perform additional accounting and administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of construction accounting experience
Strong working knowledge of construction accounting principles
Experience with progress billings, retainage, and job costing
Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300/100, Viewpoint, Procore, Jonas, QuickBooks for Construction, or similar)
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Experience working with subcontractor compliance and lien waivers
Familiarity with union payroll or certified payroll (if applicable)
