Job Summary
We are seeking an entry-level and energetic Systems Engineer to administer PostgreSQL 18 in enterprise production environments. Will design, deploy and support highly available PostgreSQL clusters spanning multiple data centers or geographic locations, ensuring continuous availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity at Coastal. Duties
PostgreSQL Administration
- Install, configure, upgrade, patch, and maintain PostgreSQL 18 clusters.
- Design, implement, and support highly available PostgreSQL architectures across multiple physical sites, regions, or data centers.
- Administer PostgreSQL clustering technologies such as Patroni, repmgr, or equivalent high-availability solutions.
- Configure synchronous and asynchronous streaming replication, logical replication, cascading replicas, and automatic failover.
- Monitor and maintain database health, replication lag, failover readiness, and cluster integrity.
- Perform zero or near-zero downtime PostgreSQL upgrades and maintenance.
- Optimize database performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, partitioning, and configuration optimization.
- Configure and tune autovacuum, WAL management, checkpoints, memory allocation, and connection management.
- Troubleshoot complex production database issues and perform root cause analysis.
- Develop database standards, operational procedures, and maintenance strategies.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
- Design and maintain PostgreSQL clusters capable of surviving site-level failures.
- Implement geographically distributed disaster recovery solutions with defined Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).
- Manage automatic failover and failback procedures.
- Conduct regular disaster recovery testing and validation exercises.
- Design resilient architectures supporting 24x7 mission-critical applications.
- Ensure replication consistency and data integrity across multiple locations.
Backup & Recovery
- Implement enterprise backup solutions using pgBackRest, WAL-G, Barman, or equivalent technologies.
- Configure continuous WAL archiving and Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR).
- Validate backups through regular recovery testing.
- Develop backup retention and archival policies.
Linux Administration
- Administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Ubuntu, or Debian systems.
- Tune Linux kernel parameters for PostgreSQL workloads.
- Configure system services using systemd.
- Monitor CPU, memory, storage, and network performance.
- Perform OS patching, security updates, and system hardening.
- Automate system administration using Bash, Python, or Ansible.
OpenZFS Administration
- Design and manage ZFS storage pools optimized for PostgreSQL.
- Configure datasets for optimal database performance.
- Manage ZFS snapshots, replication, cloning, and send/receive operations.
- Optimize ARC, L2ARC, SLOG, compression, recordsize, and special vdev configurations.
- Perform storage capacity planning and performance tuning.
- Troubleshoot storage and I/O bottlenecks.
Monitoring & Automation
- Implement monitoring using Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix, Nagios, or equivalent platforms.
- Utilize PostgreSQL tools including pg_stat_statements, pgBadger, and pgBouncer.
- Develop automation for provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, backups, and failover validation.
- Build dashboards and proactive alerting for database infrastructure.
Security
- Implement SSL/TLS encryption and secure authentication.
- Configure LDAP, Active Directory, Kerberos, or PAM integration.
- Implement role-based access controls and database auditing.
- Support security compliance and vulnerability remediation.
Documentation
- Maintain architecture diagrams for clustered and multi-site database environments.
- Develop operational runbooks for failover, recovery, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Document standard operating procedures and disaster recovery processes.
Experience
This position requires deep knowledge of PostgreSQL, Linux system administration, OpenZFS storage management, automation, and enterprise database operations. Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server administration and migration is highly desirable.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1+ years administering PostgreSQL in enterprise production environments.
- 1+ years demonstrated experience managing PostgreSQL 18 or recent PostgreSQL releases.
- 1+ years operating clustered PostgreSQL environments supporting high availability across multiple sites or data centers.
- 1+ years in OpenZFS administration experience.
- 1+ years in PostgreSQL replication, failover, backup, recovery, and performance tuning.
- Linux administration experience.
- SQL skills and query optimization experience.
- Experience automating database administration using Bash, Python, or Ansible.
- Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and documentation skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with Patroni, repmgr, Pacemaker, or similar PostgreSQL clustering technologies.
- Experience with pgBackRest, Barman, or WAL-G.
- Experience with pgBouncer or Pgpool-II.
- Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server administration.
- Experience migrating databases from Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL to PostgreSQL.
- Experience with Kubernetes operators for PostgreSQL.
- Cloud experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Infrastructure-as-Code experience using Terraform or Ansible.
Microsoft SQL Server (Preferred)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server administration.
- Familiarity with SQL Server backup and recovery concepts.
- Experience supporting heterogeneous database environments containing both PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience participating in SQL Server to PostgreSQL migration projects is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The physical demands of this position involve sedentary work constantly remaining in a stationary position, sitting for prolonged periods of time.

WAH (Work at Home) & TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have reliable high-speed internet. Minimum standard speed for optimal performance of 10 x 1 (10mbs download x 1mbs upload) required. Must have a separate private workspace / desk area designated for home office to ensure absolute and continuous privacy while at work.
