ABOUT THE COMPANY
J.D. & Billy Hines Trucking, Inc. is a 90-year-old, third-generation family trucking company headquartered in Prescott, AR. We operate two shorthaul terminals, a flatbed division, and a growing customer base across the Southeast.
We are a company with deep roots and a clear-eyed view of where we're going. Under current leadership, HTI has grown its revenue base, diversified its customer portfolio, and built a management team focused on long-term performance. This role is for someone who wants to be part of building something that lasts.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a working financial leadership role — not a delegator's seat. You will own the accounting function end-to-end, sit close to operations, and serve as the company's chief steward of cash, credit, and compliance. Cash is the heartbeat of this business. We expect the Director of Finance to know — at all times — what the position is, what's coming in, what's going out, and where the pressure points are. No surprises.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Cash Flow & Treasury — Primary Responsibility
– Own the 13-week rolling cash flow model — updated weekly without exception
– Maintain a live view of the cash position at all times; the CEO expects a real answer on demand
– Manage accounts payable prioritization, vendor payment sequencing, and financing schedule timing
– Oversee accounts receivable aging and ensure timely collections across a $26M revenue base generating $400K–$500K per week
– Manage lender and financing relationships professionally and proactively
– Flag cash risks early — before they become problems, not after
Financial Reporting & Close
– Own the monthly financial close process in Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP)
– Produce accurate, timely P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements for CEO and stakeholders
– Manage and reconcile intercompany transactions between HTI and Hi-Maintenance LLC
– Manage banking relationships — maintain account structures, monitor daily balances, and coordinate with lenders as needed
Hi-Maintenance LLC & COO Partnership
– Work daily with the COO to ensure all Hi-Maintenance LLC costs (parts, labor, maintenance events) are captured and allocated correctly against the fleet
– Maintain clean intercompany accounting between HTI and Hi-Maintenance LLC — invoicing, cost flows, and month-end reconciliation
– Support the COO on Hi-Maintenance LLC P&L visibility
– Track equipment financing and maintenance cost per unit; surface trends that affect fleet decisions
Accounting Operations
– Own the general ledger — maintain accuracy, integrity, and reconciliation across all cost centers, divisions, and terminals
– Oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions — ensure processes are running correctly, aging is managed, and nothing is falling through the cracks
– Oversee payroll processing and maintain the Paylocity-to-GP integration
– Oversee driver settlement reconciliation — ensure driver pay is accurate, properly coded, and reflected correctly in the GL
– Ensure revenue data from the transportation management system (TMW) flows correctly into GP by terminal and division
– Own fuel cost reporting and variance tracking — fuel is a primary cost driver and needs to be monitored at the terminal and fleet level
– Manage IFTA fuel tax reporting — ensure accurate mileage and fuel data by jurisdiction, filed on time
– Oversee insurance cost tracking and coordinate financial data for annual renewal
– Own the fixed asset register — maintain accurate records of fleet and equipment, ensure depreciation schedules are current and properly reflected in the GL
– Manage and develop accounting staff — set the standard, review the work, build the capability
– Oversee truck and trailer licensing — ensure all registrations are current, costs are tracked, and renewals are managed proactively
– Own month-end and year-end close — on time, every time
Strategic Finance
– Support the CEO on major financial decisions including fleet trades, lender negotiations, and capital planning
– Model revenue, cost, and margin scenarios at the lane, terminal, and customer level
– Own annual budget process; maintain a rolling forward-looking view of the business
– Support legal and CPA engagement on corporate structure, tax, and compliance matters
– Provide financial analysis in support of new customer bids, lane pricing, and contract renewals
Risk, Controls & Compliance
– Design and maintain internal controls appropriate for a company of our size and growth trajectory
– Identify financial risk exposure — operational, credit, and cash — and surface it to leadership proactively
– Ensure segregation of duties and accountability across the accounting function
– Maintain audit-ready books and records at all times
– Coordinate with outside CPA and legal counsel on tax filings, entity compliance, and financial reporting requirements
– Ensure proper entity-level accounting across J.D. & Billy Hines Trucking, Inc. and Hi-Maintenance LLC
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required
– 5+ years of accounting or finance experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or senior accounting role
– Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP) or comparable ERP — you must be able to work in the system, not just supervise others who do
– Strong command of cash flow management, AP/AR, and month-end close processes
– Track record of building or improving accounting infrastructure in a small-to-mid-size business
– Ability to model financial scenarios in Excel — pivot tables, cash flow projections, lane-level margin analysis
– Direct, honest communication style — you tell the CEO what she needs to hear, not what's comfortable
Strongly Preferred
– Experience in transportation, logistics, or an asset-heavy industry
– Familiarity with Paylocity or similar payroll platform
– Experience managing intercompany accounting across multiple legal entities
– Familiarity with IFTA reporting and trucking-specific cost structures
– CPA license or active pursuit thereof
Not a Fit If
– You need extensive oversight to produce reliable work
– You are uncomfortable with ambiguity or legacy systems
– You have never managed a close process hands-on
– You treat "that's how we've always done it" as an acceptable answer
SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT
Familiarity with these platforms is a significant advantage:
– Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP) — primary accounting ERP
– TMW Systems — transportation management; primary source of revenue and driver pay data
– Paylocity — payroll platform; integration with GP is an active project
– Microsoft Excel — used extensively for cash flow, scenario modeling, and management reporting
WHAT WE OFFER
– Direct access to and collaboration with the President & CEO
– Ownership over a critical function — this is not a bureaucratic seat
– A company with real history, a real balance sheet, and a leadership team that values precision and honesty over politics
– Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
– Performance incentive tied to company financial outcomes
– Benefits package including health insurance
– Stable, growing operation backed by 90 years of industry experience and long-term dedicated contracts
A NOTE ON CULTURE
We are a third-generation family business, and that is not a marketing line — it is the backbone of how we operate. Drivers who have been behind the wheel for us for 30 years. Employees who have given 40 or more to this company. That kind of loyalty is earned, and it sets the standard for everyone who walks in the door. At the helm is a 27-year-old CEO with a master's in accounting who has made the hard calls, built a leadership team worth following, and refuses to treat this company as anything less than what it is — a 90-year legacy worth protecting.
If you want a seat at the table in a company that is actively becoming what it intends to be — this is that job. If you want a title and a quiet corner office, this is not.
