Full Job Description

General Accountability

Reporting to the Facilities Maintenance, Fabrication, and Machining Manager, the Junior Machinist operates standard toolroom equipment to manufacture machine parts. This role is responsible for machining simple parts from raw materials through finished products while consistently meeting or exceeding production, safety, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Review procedures, work orders, blueprints, setup sheets, and verbal instructions to plan efficient job layouts with minimal setups.
Perform machine programming and program edits at machine controls as needed.
Select the appropriate machine, tooling, and equipment for each job.
Gather required tooling and fixtures or coordinate with the toolroom when necessary.
Set up machines according to established operating procedures and specifications.
Calculate machining speeds, feeds, depths of cuts, and tapers.
Identify materials and perform hardness testing as required.
Adjust tooling callouts, offsets, speeds, and feeds to accommodate material variations.
Perform a variety of machining operations and produce complex parts requiring precise feature placement, tapers, and tolerances of less than .005 inches.
Consistently meet or exceed production, safety, and quality expectations.
Use precision measuring instruments to verify part dimensions and specifications.
Perform and evaluate Level I Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) on finished parts.
Complete inspection and quality documentation accurately and on time.
Operate material handling equipment to transport parts and components safely.
Maintain a clean and organized work area and dispose of waste in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
Report equipment malfunctions, operational concerns, or safety issues to management promptly.
Assist other departments with projects as workload permits.
Comply with all health, safety, quality, and company operating procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsRequired

High school diploma or GED.
Minimum of 1 year of machining experience in a manufacturing or similar environment, or equivalent in-house training and experience.
Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, including multiple views and machining surfaces.
Ability to independently operate mills, lathes, and manual machining equipment with minimal supervision.
Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Proficiency with gauges, precision measuring instruments, and inspection equipment.
Ability to read machine controls and make programming edits as required.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment.
