Electrical Forensic Engineer (Houston, Texas)

Location: Houston, Texas (Home-Based)
Territory: Primarily Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and surrounding states

NEFCO Fire Investigations is seeking an experienced Electrical Forensic Engineer to join our growing team in the Houston area.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working independently, and applying real-world electrical knowledge to determine how and why failures occur.

Unlike a traditional engineering position, every day is different. One day you may be examining the electrical system of a commercial building after a fire, the next you may be investigating residential wiring, industrial equipment, heavy machinery, an automobile involved in a fire, or conducting laboratory examinations of electrical components.

If you enjoy troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and technical detective work, this position offers a unique and rewarding career.

What You'll Do

Working alongside experienced fire investigators, you will perform forensic examinations to determine whether electrical failures contributed to fires and other property losses.

Assignments may include:

Residential fire scenes
Commercial fire scenes
Industrial facilities and manufacturing plants
Heavy equipment
Automobiles and specialty vehicles
Electrical equipment and appliances
Laboratory examinations of electrical components

Typical equipment examined includes:

Electrical service equipment and panelboards
Circuit breakers and fuses
Building wiring
Switches and receptacles
Lighting systems and ceiling fans
HVAC equipment
Pumps and motors
Controls and automation systems
Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
Transformers
Generators
Batteries and battery systems
Power strips and surge protectors
Computers and electronic equipment
Household appliances
Commercial food service equipment
Industrial machinery
Photovoltaic (solar) systems
Switchgear
And many other electrical and electromechanical devices

What We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate is an experienced electrical engineer with practical, hands-on knowledge of commercial electrical systems and a solid understanding of household residential electrical systems. The successful candidate enjoys troubleshooting complex electrical failures, working independently, and applying real-world engineering experience to determine the root cause of electrical and fire-related incidents.

Candidates with previous military engineering experience, prior volunteer firefighting experience, or a Master Electrician background are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Mechanical Engineering (BSME)
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
Minimum five years of engineering experience
Strong knowledge of commercial electrical systems required
Working knowledge of residential household electrical systems preferred
Experience performing troubleshooting, failure analysis, or root cause analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to travel throughout Texas and surrounding states
