Position Information
TxDOT's Houston District is looking for independent and capable crew members to staff the Harris County Night Crew. Crew members will be filling the exciting role of responding to overnight emergencies throughout the county, working to keeps roadways safe and open for the traveling public. The Harris County Night Crew will also ensure that overnight maintenance projects are properly delivered to keep Houston roads open. Position Description
Transportation Maint Tech I;
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Maint Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material
and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on
equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities.
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Maint Tech III:
Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and
process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on
equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact
with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred
to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Maint Tech I:

Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.

Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
-
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.

Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.

Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.

Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.

Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.

Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.

Transportation Maint Tech II:
Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Maintenance Tech I as well as:

Transportation Maint Tech III:
Includes all essential duties listed for Transportation Maintenance Tech I and II as well as:

Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.

Transportation Maint Tech II:

1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.
