Senior Accountant

Houston, TX | Full-Time | Exempt

At the Houston SPCA, we believe every life deserves care, respect, and protection. As our Sr. Accountant, you won’t just manage financial operations—you will play a critical leadership role in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and stewardship of resources that directly support animal welfare.

We’re seeking a hands-on, values-driven finance leader who thrives in a mission-based environment, builds strong teams, and takes ownership of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

How You’ll Contribute

You’ll be most successful in this role if you naturally:

Take Ownership & Drive Results

Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, AP, payroll review, reconciliations, and reporting
Ensure accuracy across financial records, donor-restricted funds, and investment tracking
Maintain and continuously improve month-end, year-end, and audit processes

Build Trust Through Integrity & Accountability

Serve as a steward of organizational resources with a strong ethical foundation
Establish and enforce internal controls and proper segregation of duties
Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit standards, and regulatory requirements

Collaborate & Influence

Partner with HR, Development, and leadership to ensure financial alignment
Communicate financial insights clearly to executives and Board stakeholders
Build strong relationships across departments as a trusted advisor

Lead & Develop People

Manage and mentor accounting staff, fostering growth and accountability
Create a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and support

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
10+ years of progressive accounting experience (management level preferred)
CPA or CMA preferred
Nonprofit accounting experience preferred
Advanced Excel skills and strong Microsoft Office proficiency
Experience with financial systems (Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus; Paychex a plus)
