Withdrawal Management Director

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated Withdrawal Management Director to lead the withdrawal services team within our established Medically Assisted Withdrawal Management unit. This role is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the unit, including patient care, staff leadership, clinical and operational performance, census management, and financial performance. The Director ensures adherence to physician-established protocols, regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and recognized best practices. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience in behavioral health and addiction treatment, withdrawal management, crisis intervention, and leadership of multidisciplinary teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the medically assisted withdrawal management program, with a primary focus on patient safety, comfort, quality of care, and effective service delivery.
Supervise and support clinical and program staff, including nurses, counselors, and support personnel, through ongoing guidance, training, coaching, performance management, and performance evaluations.
Ensure consistent implementation of physician-established intake, treatment, withdrawal management, detoxification, and discharge protocols and applicable best practices.
Oversee patient intake assessments, diagnostic evaluations, ongoing case management, and coordination of individualized withdrawal management plans.
Ensure accurate, timely, and complete documentation within the electronic health record (EHR) and compliance with HIPAA requirements and organizational documentation standards.
Oversee crisis intervention processes and support staff in responding promptly and effectively to clinical or behavioral emergencies while maintaining a safe and therapeutic treatment environment.
Manage patient census, admissions, discharges, and transitions to appropriate longer-term levels of care to support continuity of treatment.
Monitor and manage the financial and operating performance of the withdrawal management unit, including staffing efficiency, census, resource utilization, and overall unit performance.
Promote effective communication and collaboration among nursing, counseling, medical, support, and leadership teams to ensure coordinated patient care and efficient unit operations.
Lead the hiring process for all positions within the Withdrawal Management unit in collaboration with the Human Resources department, including identifying staffing needs, participating in recruiting and interviewing, selecting qualified candidates, and supporting onboarding and retention efforts.
Work closely with Human Resources on workforce planning, employee relations, performance management, corrective action, training needs, staffing vacancies, and other personnel matters affecting the Withdrawal Management unit.
Provide leadership, direction, and operational oversight to Withdrawal Management technicians, ensuring appropriate staffing, training, role clarity, accountability, and effective support of patient care and unit operations.
Coordinate with drivers and transportation staff to support safe, timely, and reliable patient transportation for admissions, discharges, appointments, transfers, and other program-related transportation needs.

Qualifications

Must have a bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of three years of prior management experience in a withdrawal management facility or unit, or comparable leadership experience in a behavioral health or addiction treatment setting with a significant focus on withdrawal management.
Demonstrated experience supervising multidisciplinary teams in behavioral health, addiction treatment, social work, nursing, counseling, or a related clinical environment.
Strong knowledge of withdrawal management, addiction treatment, crisis intervention, co-occurring mental health disorders, and patient safety practices.
Working knowledge of medical terminology and relevant clinical documentation practices.
Experience with patient assessment, diagnostic evaluation, case management, counseling services, and effective patient communication strategies.
Proficiency with electronic medical record/electronic health record (EMR/EHR) systems and a strong understanding of HIPAA requirements.
Knowledge of evidence-based addiction counseling approaches, including motivational interviewing and behavioral therapy techniques.
Ability to support clinical teams in managing complex cases involving substance use disorders, PTSD, and other co-occurring mental health conditions.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to foster a respectful, patient-centered treatment environment.
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance clinical quality, staff performance, patient flow, and operational priorities.
