Full Job Description

Position at a Glance

This is a hands-on Ambulatory Surgery Center nursing position with an intentional pathway toward clinical leadership.

The nurse hired in this role will initially work alongside our nursing team, learn our ophthalmic surgical workflows, and become fully integrated into the daily operations of the Surgery Center. Over time, this individual will receive mentorship from our long-tenured nursing leader, assume increasing responsibility, and develop into a go-to clinical resource and future leader for the surgery team.

It is not required for this candidate to have already held a Nurse Manager, ASC Director, or other formal administrative position. We are looking for a capable and motivated nurse with the judgment, initiative, desire, and interpersonal skills required to grow into that level of responsibility.

This opportunity is specifically intended for someone who wants to remain involved in direct patient care while also possessing the goal of developing into a key leadership role. Candidates seeking a traditional staff-nursing position without an interest in future leadership may not find this to be the right long-term fit.

Holland Eye Surgery & Laser Center has provided quality care in West Michigan since the practice was founded in 1952. With both a Surgery Center and Clinic on site, we provide each patient with compassionate, state-of-the-art medical and surgical eye care.

Our doctors, nurses, technicians, and staff work together as a tightly knit team built on collaboration and trust. As a small private practice with limited bureaucracy, we rely on people who take ownership, adapt when needed, and work together to solve problems.

Our nurses traditionally work three to four days per week. We do not work evenings, weekends, or holidays, and there are no on-call duties.

The Role: Today and Over Time

Initially: Become a Trusted Member of the Nursing Team

Responsibilities may include:

Pre/Post-op

Manage the efficient flow of patients before and after surgery while ensuring a high-level of care.
Monitor vitals, administer IVs, and perform charting as needed.
Collaborate with the rest of the surgery team to ensure cases are well managed.
Call patients in the afternoon to check on them post-surgery.
Manage storage and ordering of certain surgical supply inventory.

OR Scrub

Manage surgical tools and protocols to assist doctor during each case.
Assist in room turnover between cases.
Manage storage and ordering of certain surgical supply inventory.
Perform charting responsibilities for each case.

Office

Perform calls to go over surgery instructions with patients, ensuring everything is coordinated to deliver a smooth experience.
Execute charting details related to surgical coordination, order necessary external testing, records, etc.
Develop the daily surgery schedule and communicate any changes to the team.
Point person for any surgery related questions that arise in the clinic.
Assist in the management and ordering of certain supplies.
Respond to any medical emergencies in the clinic.

Over Time: Grow into Clinical Leadership

As you become established and demonstrate readiness, you will gradually assume greater responsibility for:

Serving as a key resource for nurses, technicians, doctors, management, and other staff.
Providing day-to-day guidance when clinical questions, unusual situations, or workflow challenges arise.
Stepping forward calmly and confidently when coordination or leadership is needed.
Supporting staff onboarding, training, competencies, and continued development.
Helping maintain consistent nursing practices and high standards of patient care.
Identifying workflow gaps, recurring problems, and opportunities for improvement.
Managing ASC policies and procedures, accreditation, regulatory compliance, quality improvement, infection prevention, emergency preparedness, and staff education.
Helping coordinate staffing assignments, patient flow, supplies, equipment, and clinical priorities.

The timing and scope of increased responsibility will be based on demonstrated readiness, clinical judgment, team trust, and organizational needs. This position offers a genuine path toward broader responsibility, but advancement will be earned through performance and development rather than granted solely based on time in the role.

Experience and Qualifications

Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Michigan.
Professional nursing experience is required; however, we place greater value on demonstrated ability, initiative, and leadership potential than on a specific number of years.
Nurses with a few years of strong professional experience who are motivated to grow into leadership are encouraged to apply.
Ambulatory surgery, perioperative, or ophthalmic experience is not required for an otherwise strong candidate.
Previous formal supervisory or management experience holds weight but is not required as long as the candidate desires to grow into this type of role.

We cannot teach someone to care deeply, take ownership, remain curious, earn the trust of others, or genuinely want the responsibility that accompanies leadership, which is why it is so crucial for you to possess these traits over specific technical experience.
