Purpose
The Casting Production Superintendent is accountable for delivering the safety, production, quality, and reliability performance of the casting department through disciplined daily execution.
This position is highly tactical, floor-focused role, with responsibility for driving the day-to-day actions required to control the casting business performance. Key business issues include managing process excursions, underperforming equipment, workforce issues, and resource utilization.
The department Casting Manager defines the operational strategies, priorities, and directional improvements; this role is responsible for deploying, executing, and sustaining those strategies and systems effectively across the operations - business systems that stabilized and continually improve the Casting Operations.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Leadership (Non-Negotiable)
Own and enforce a proactive safety culture within the casting department.
Ensure all work is executed in full compliance with safety standards, procedures, and risk mitigation / controls.
Facilitates and / or assigns coordinators and supervisors responsible for incident investigations. Consistency by following incident data collection and applying standard incident investigation methodology (RCFA’s).
Collaborate with direct reports and the wider workforce to ensure problems are addressed to root cause and that employees are empowered to positively impact safety / business change.
Leadership Expectations & Floor Presence (Primary Focus)
Lead with a strong presence on the floor and a focus on execution over administration.
Function as a key member of the management team, supporting alignment to plant priorities.
Demonstrate company values: Sustainable, Action-Oriented, Committed.
Lead and actively control daily casting operations in Daily Management Meetings (DMS) and on the floor presence (GEMBA Walks), ensuring stability and performance across all lines and shifts.
Take immediate, hands-on action with:
Process excursions and negative trends
o Focus and energy dedicated to underperforming casters – actual vs targets
o Personnel concerns and behavioral issues that negatively impact individual, and / or
team performance
o Gap closure through timely resource deployment and utilization
Drive positive work culture behaviors that support – hazard / problems identification and risk
mitigation strategies - in the moment and / or planned and scheduled.
Maintain strong visibility and control of performance through DMS, daily operating routines
and Standardized Work – Leadership or Operators
Coach, Mentor & Workforce Culture Development
Lead, coach, and hold accountable Area Coordinators and Shift Supervisors for daily
execution and results.
Ensure frontline operators clearly understand and perform their role responsibilities
Drive discipline, ownership, and consistency in how quality of work is performed.
Address people-related performance issues in a timely manner.
Ensure alignment across shifts and eliminate variability between crews.
Strategy Deployment & System Execution
Deploy and execute operational strategies and priorities set by the department Casting
Manager.
Ensure effective implementation and sustainment of:
o Daily Management Systems (DMS)
o Standardized Work – Methods and Behaviors
o Training systems that effectively address operator competency and role progression –
employing both Theory and On-the-Job (OJT)
o Problem-solving processes (RCA)
o Performance tracking and accountability routines
Translate strategic direction into clear, actionable expectations for line leadership and teams.
Operational Performance Accountability
Own delivery of daily and short-term performance targets across:
o Production
o Downtime
o Scrap Generation
o Quality (On Grade)
o Cost control
Use daily data and results to prioritize actions and recover performance gaps immediately.
Ensure process underperformance is addressed based on priority – urgent vs important.
Quality Accountability
Accountable for all casting product quality and compliance with:
o Internal customer specifications as outlined in the Service Level Agreement (SLA)
o Alloy requirements to ensure Off Analysis (OA) requirements are met.
Ensure strict adherence to process controls and quality standards.
Reliability & Downtime Reduction
Own casting asset performance through tight operational control and execution.
Work cross-functionally with Maintenance and Engineering to:
o Reduce unplanned downtime
o Improve reliability through the elimination of repeat failures
Ensure issues are followed through from identification to permanent resolution, not just
escalation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree, preferably in the Engineering Field
- 7-10 years related experience in Casting of Aluminum products.
- 5-10 years’ experience as a production supervisor or manager in a manufacturing environment
- Strong background working in a TS16949 certified facility.
- Intermediate knowledge of MS Office, including Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
- In-depth knowledge of the casting process, the operation of equipment, aluminum alloys and
- standards, use of precision instruments and customer orders and specifications.
- Be a contributing member of the management team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work as a team.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Perform additional duties as required to support business success.
