Overview
The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist will work as integral part of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) team to create and maintain a culture that reflects a commitment to protecting the environment, health, safety and sustainability of employees, environment and products. They will ensure we adhere to all applicable regulatory compliance and continuous improvement through technical support and tactical execution.
Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Business Management, Occupational Safety, or related field or equivalent demonstrated skills and abilities at a significant level of responsibility, required.
RCRA and DOT Hazardous Material Certification, as required.
30-hour OSHA certification, CPR Trainer certification and Incident Command training preferred.
Minimum 3 years Environmental or Safety, or industry experience.
Job Responsibilities

Stay abreast of new environmental and safety laws, regulations, and best practices to support compliance, benchmarking and continuous improvement activities.

Provide regulatory support and information to maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental laws. Assist with the preparation of environmental permits, reports, emission tracking, and other related documents.

Develop and maintain Spill Prevention Control & Countermeasure Plans and updates. Develop and lead Spill Drill Training. Monitor spill report and resolve spills.

Drive injury prevention and injury-free culture through developing and managing behavior-based safety program which will incent and reward proactive safety behavior.

Review all incoming material and chemical approvals and maintain safety data sheet system.

Oversee and support Environmental Management System internal audits; direct facility environmental audits and drive corrective actions resulting from audits and drills.

Assist with Regulated Waste Management Program by waste determination, tracking and waste minimization projects.

Responsible for and trained (as required) to understand RCRA hazardous waste rule including but not limited to waste hazards, storage time limits, satellite accumulation, marking, labeling, daily and weekly inspections, aisle space, storage, manifest shipping, use and location of emergency equipment, response to spills, Contingency Plan requirements.

Complete regular facility walkthroughs to evaluate compliance with environmental regulations.

Approve machine IQ/OQs for EHS and maintain Environmental Equipment List by updating processing aid and compliance information as required.

Annual RCRA Large Quantity Generator training, as required by specific job functions. This position requires initial training within six months and annually thereafter as a hazardous waste handler as required by EPA RCRA hazardous waste rules.

DOT Hazardous Material initial training within six months and at least every three years thereafter as a hazardous waste hander as required by DOT and specific job functions.

Further develop and grow the leadership training program for Emergency Coordinators.

Maintain the Environmental Management System (EMS) consistent with ISO 14001 and Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&S) aligning with ISO 45001. This includes writing or updating procedures, work instructions, or forms as needed.

Maintain elements of OSHA required programs including, but not limited to, Forklift Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Personal Protective Equipment, Confined Space Entry, Hazard Communication, Fall Protection, Hearing Conservation and Emergency Response.

Perform annual review of aspect and impact analysis and identify areas of concern; train on identified impacts.

Evaluate “high risk” departments and make recommendations for engineering/ergonomic improvements to strain/sprain injuries; review opportunities for job rotation and reduction of repetitive motion activities in collaboration with the EHS Manager and operations leadership.

Evaluate opportunities to eliminate and/or improve hazards associated with manual material handling practices companywide; work with employees to implement changes.

Collaborate with facility engineering and operations to create and maintain job hazard analysis for each workstation.
-
Support EHS committee meetings; facilitate discussions and drive safety related action items resulting from EHS committee meetings.

Act as back-up for first point of contact for injuries, illnesses and near misses; participate in incident investigations and recommend and track corrective actions; manage OSHA 300 log.
- Conduct New Employee Orientation and other environmental and safety training not offered through the Learning Management System (LMS). Assist with creating content and materials for training, in collaboration with the EHS Manager, as needed.

Complete annual audit of Safety Data Sheets (SDS), resolve discrepancies found, and provide system training to employees on labeling system and SDS comprehension.

Perform other duties as requested by management.

Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be capable of self-checking completed work.

Proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office products, specifically Microsoft Excel.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Frequent travel to other Fort Wayne Metals facilities, required.

Annual travel for training.

Must be able to access all areas of operation, including second floors.

Occasional pushing and lifting of up to 30 pounds.

Frequent bending, reaching and stooping during shift.
