About Us:
Filling in the Blanks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting childhood hunger by providing nutritious food to children in need. We believe no child should face food insecurity, and our programs deliver critical resources to families and communities.

Job Summary:
Filling in the Blanks (FITB) relies on a large and engaged volunteer network to pack, organize, and distribute food through its Weekend Meal Bag Program, Mobile Pantry, and School-Based Pantry initiatives. FITB is seeking an energetic, highly organized, and mission-driven Volunteer Coordinator to lead and grow one of the organization’s most important assets - its volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will oversee all aspects of volunteer engagement including recruitment, scheduling, communication, training, retention, and recognition. This individual will ensure that volunteers have a meaningful, organized and mission-centered experience while helping FITB efficiently meet growing community needs. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment; enjoys working with people from diverse backgrounds; and is passionate about community engagement, food insecurity, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteer Recruitment & Engagement

Recruit and onboard individual, corporate, school, faith-based, and community volunteers.
Build and maintain strong relationships with volunteer groups and community partners.
Develop outreach strategies to increase volunteer participation and retention.
Serve as the primary point of contact for all volunteer inquiries and communication.
Ensure volunteers feel welcomed, valued, informed, and connected to the mission.

Volunteer Operations & Scheduling

Coordinate volunteer schedules for packing events, warehouse support, Mobile Pantry distributions, and special events.
Manage volunteer sign-ups and attendance using volunteer management software
Ensure appropriate staffing for all volunteer activities.
Maintain accurate volunteer records, waivers, hours, and participation data.
Assist in planning volunteer flow and logistics to maximize efficiency and safety.
Work with the Operations and Warehouse team on setting and achieving monthly goals.

Training & Supervision

Conduct volunteer orientations and trainings.
Provide on-site supervision and support during volunteer activities.
Communicate safety procedures, operational expectations, and program goals.
Troubleshoot operational challenges in real time and adapt quickly as needed.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented volunteer culture.

Community & Corporate Engagement

Coordinate corporate volunteer days and community service opportunities.
Work collaboratively with development and communications staff to strengthen volunteer engagement and storytelling.
Help create impactful volunteer experiences that deepen long-term community support.
Represent FITB professionally at community events and outreach opportunities.

Recognition & Stewardship

Develop volunteer appreciation and recognition initiatives.
Track volunteer impact metrics and help communicate outcomes to stakeholders.
Share stories and feedback that demonstrate volunteer impact on children and families served.
Support cultivation of volunteers into donors, ambassadors, and long-term advocates.

Administrative & Organizational Support

Assist with special events and organization-wide initiatives as needed.
Support warehouse and distribution operations during high-volume periods.
Help improve volunteer systems, processes, and efficiencies as the organization continues to grow.

Schedule: In office Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, job may require some evenings and weekends, off site travel will be required, must have own transportation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent professional experience.
2–4 years of experience in volunteer management, nonprofit operations, community engagement, event coordination or related work.
Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Comfortable leading groups and working in fast-paced, active environments.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs.
Experience working with volunteers, community groups, or corporate partnerships strongly preferred.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and participate in warehouse/distribution activities as needed.
Availability for occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends, particularly for Mobile Pantry distributions and volunteer events.
Fluency in Spanish a plus but not required.
