Full Job Description

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Location: Village of Swansea, IL
Department: Public Works
Pay Range: $27.00/hour – $30.00/hour DOQ
Employment Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt/Hourly

The Village of Swansea is seeking a dedicated and responsible Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to help monitor and maintain the operation of the plant's equipment and processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform laboratory analysis of wastewater, may mix and apply chemicals to those processes.
Help monitor and ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the wastewater treatment plant and lift stations.
Sample wastewater and storm water from various sources, including influent, effluent and solids within the treatment plant property, as well as any tributary rivers, streams or other locations as required
Order chemicals, materials and supplies, or services, and schedule drop-offs and pickups, as needed.
Operate equipment used in the wastewater treatment plant, including motors, pumps, bar screens, clarifiers, aerators, valves, blowers, chlorinators and other related equipment
The plant operates 24/7 so Licensed Operator’s work schedule will include rotating weekend hours to monitor that operation. The position is also subject to callout twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, including weekends and holidays
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the treatment plant and prepare weekly and monthly reports to IEPA, EPA and the Village Board as required
Perform routine custodial and maintenance duties at the treatment facilities and grounds, which may include cutting and trimming grass, snow removal, corrosion control, painting, minor carpentry work, window washing, sweeping, mopping, wiping, dusting, spraying, cleaning and disinfecting all lift stations, buildings and facilities, including bathroom facilities and other similar tasks.

Qualifications:

Required: Must have a high school diploma or its satisfactory equivalent (GED).
Advanced education preferred, including completion of multiple Wastewater Courses.
Ideal candidate will have at least one (1) year wastewater operating experience, specifically performing the hands-on operational duties of a wastewater treatment works operator, which includes direct hands-on physical operation of wastewater treatment equipment and/or wastewater treatment processes. Direct active field supervision of wastewater treatment equipment and/or wastewater treatment processes, and/or direct and active involvement in process control decisions for wastewater treatment processes. OR
Must have a combined level of wastewater operating experience as defined above, plus substitutional experience in the form of classroom education which has been accepted by the IEPA for the issuance of a Class 4,3,2 or 1 Illinois Waste Water Treatment Works Operator License. OR
Must successfully obtain a Wastewater Operator Class 4 certification within six (6) months of hire. An additional six (6)-month extension may be granted at the sole discretion of the Human Resources Manager and Director of Public Works, provided the employee demonstrates satisfactory performance in the principal duties and requirements outlines above, along with exceptional mechanical and electrical aptitude.
Must have a clean driving record and a valid driver’s license. Class B with airbrakes preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently and 100 lbs occasionally.
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and varied terrain.
Able to operate trucks, heavy equipment, and technical plant equipment.
