We are a well-established, privately held group of operating companies seeking a highly capable senior bookkeeper to own the accuracy and timeliness of our accounting records. This is a hands-on accounting role—not a traditional Controller or CFO position though it could progress that way. The right person will be strong enough to close the books, understand job costing, spot problems, and give ownership dependable financial information without needing a large accounting staff.
An A/P and A/R clerk handles much of the day-to-day transaction processing. This position will review that work, maintain the general ledger, complete the monthly close, and make sure the numbers are accurate across multiple related companies.
What You Will Own
- Complete an accurate and timely monthly close for multiple related entities.
- Maintain the general ledger, prepare journal entries, and reconcile bank, credit-card, loan, payroll-liability, and balance-sheet accounts.
- Review accounts payable and accounts receivable activity completed by the A/P and A/R clerk; resolve discrepancies and maintain sound controls.
- Maintain intercompany accounts and ensure transactions are recorded consistently between entities.
- Maintain job-costing records and assist with work-in-progress (WIP) reporting for construction and project-based work.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and practical management reports for ownership, including cash position, receivables, payables, job performance, and notable variances.
- Help maintain short-term cash-flow projections, budgets, and basic financial forecasts using reliable accounting data.
- Coordinate with outside CPA and tax professionals and prepare schedules for year-end, tax, insurance, banking, and audit-related requests.
- Maintain organized documentation and protect confidential company and employee information.
- Construction/project accounting, job costing, and WIP reporting are now required experience.
- The candidate now owns the financial accuracy of job costing and WIP, including contract values, incurred costs, billings, committed costs, and estimated costs to complete.
What This Role Is—and Is Not
- This is a senior, hands-on bookkeeping and accounting-management position.
- It is ideal for someone who has operated as a full-charge bookkeeper, senior bookkeeper, assistant controller, or accounting manager in a privately held business.
- It is not a strategic CFO role, and it does not require responsibility for capital strategy, mergers and acquisitions, or executive-level financial leadership.
- Payroll processing is handled separately and is not a primary responsibility.
Required Experience
- At least 5 years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience, including direct responsibility for month-end close.
- Strong working knowledge of general-ledger accounting, reconciliations, accruals, A/P, A/R, and financial statements.
- Ability to investigate discrepancies, correct errors, and improve routine accounting processes independently.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with accounting software.
- Excellent organization, follow-through, judgment, communication, and discretion.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
- Experience with construction accounting, manufacturing accounting, job costing, or WIP reporting.
- Experience supporting multiple related entities and handling intercompany activity.
- Experience working directly with an owner, integrator, or senior leadership team.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field—or equivalent hands-on experience.
Who Will Be Successful Here
You are accurate, steady, and comfortable being accountable for the books. You know how to get beneath a number when it does not look right, and you communicate issues early and clearly. You enjoy improving the reliability of an accounting department, but you also remain willing to do hands-on work. You do not need a Controller title to take pride in producing clean, useful financial information.
