Assistant Controller
Summary
The Assistant Controller is a key member of the Accounting leadership team responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Accounting department while ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. This position partners closely with the Controller to manage the month-end close process, financial reporting, tax support, budgeting, internal controls, staff development, and continuous process improvement.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with strong technical accounting knowledge, commercial real estate accounting experience, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Job Description
The Assistant Controller supports the department in overseeing the financial operations of the company. This role involves managing accounting functions, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations, preparing financial reports, and assisting in budgeting and forecasting processes. The Assistant Controller collaborates with various departments to analyze financial data and provide insights for strategic decision-making.
Essential Responsibilities
Financial Reporting
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Process monthly operating cash flows and quarterly lender reporting packages.
- Prepare monthly financial projections.
- Review and reconcile balance sheet accounts for operating entities.
- Analyze financial statements and investigate variances.
- Distribute financial reports to management and department leaders.
Month-End Close
- Leading the 10-business-day month-end close process, for all assigned entities.
- Review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and adjusting entries.
- Ensure timely completion of month-end deliverables.
- Monitoring department KPIs and close deadlines.
Accounting Operations
- Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, and inter-company transactions
- Ensure financial transactions are accurately recorded.
- Partnering with Property Management and Leasing to resolve tenant accounting issues and improve financial reporting.
Tax and Compliance
- Assist with year-end financial packages for external tax preparers.
- Review and process auditor adjustments and K-1 entries.
- Process annual 1099 reporting.
- Maintain tax escrow accounts.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets.
- Support forecasting and cash flow planning.
- Monitor budget-to-actual variances and provide recommendations.
- Analyze trends and identify opportunities for operational improvements.
Internal Controls & Audit
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies.
- Support internal and external audit requests.
- Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, coach, and mentor Accounting staff.
- Assist with employee training, onboarding, and performance management.
- Coordinate department workload and priorities.
- Foster accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Promote a culture of accuracy, ownership, and customer service.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and automation.
- Assist with implementation of accounting system enhancements.
- Develop standardized procedures and documentation.
- Recommend efficiencies to improve departmental performance.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain fixed asset schedules.
- Process monthly management fee and repair billings.
- Support lender reporting requirements.
- Assist with special projects assigned by the Controller.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory or management experience.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with financial reporting and month-end close.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred
- Commercial real estate accounting experience.
- Experience with property management/accounting software (Skyline experience preferred).
- Experience preparing financial statements for multiple entities.
- Tax preparation support experience.
- Experience managing lender reporting and cash flow reporting.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $97,000.00 per year
