ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a skilled, dependable, and quality-minded welder/fabricator to join our team at our Indianapolis shop.
Underwood Industrial Contractors is a family-owned company established in 1898. For more than 125 years, we have built our reputation on hard work, dependable service, and putting quality work first for our customers.
This is primarily a shop-based position focused on welding, fabrication, and preparing industrial structures and components for our installation projects.
This is not a high-volume “hurry up” operation where getting it out the door is more important than doing it right. We believe quality workmanship matters. The right candidate takes pride in their work, pays attention to the details, and understands that the quality of what we build in our shop directly affects the work we perform for our customers in the field.

COMPENSATION
Starting compensation is $24–$28 per hour, based on experience and skill.
The right candidate with the right skillset, work ethic, and motivation has the opportunity to increase their earnings through skill development, increased responsibilities, travel, overtime, and advancement within the company.
You will not start at the top of the pay range, but if you prove your value, develop your skills, take pride in your work, and consistently deliver quality results for our customers, you will have the opportunity to be compensated accordingly.
We believe employees who bring value to the company should have the opportunity to increase their earnings as their skills, experience, and responsibilities grow.
Raises are based on performance, skill development, reliability, leadership ability, and the value you bring to the company. Raises may be considered before or within the first 90 days for employees who demonstrate that they are exceeding expectations and making a strong contribution to the team.
OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH
For the right person, this position can become much more than a welding and fabrication job.
An employee who demonstrates strong leadership skills, dependability, communication, decision-making, organization, and the ability to lead a crew may have the opportunity to advance into an Assistant Shop Foreman or Shop Foreman position as opportunities become available.
With increased responsibility and demonstrated leadership ability comes the opportunity for significant increases in compensation. An experienced employee who develops into a strong leader and takes on additional responsibility can have the potential to move their earnings close to or into the six-figure range.
We are not looking for someone who simply wants to clock in and clock out. We are looking for someone who wants to learn, grow, take on responsibility, and build a long-term career with our company.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position is primarily a Monday–Friday, first-shift shop position.
Regular hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
This position normally has little to no overtime.
However, additional overtime opportunities may be available by assisting our traveling installation crews on projects throughout the United States.
Travel projects may include weekend jobs or longer projects and may involve 10–12 hour workdays, overtime, hotel accommodations, and per diem.
Travel is not the primary responsibility of this position, but employees who are interested in gaining additional experience and earning additional income may have opportunities to assist with field projects.
OUR CULTURE
After more than 125 years in business as a family-owned company, we know what it takes to find the right person. We are not necessarily looking for someone with 30 years of experience, but we are looking for someone with proven skills, real-world experience, and the right character.
We value:
- Honesty — if something goes wrong, own it and communicate upfront
- Accountability — someone who looks in the mirror before pointing fingers
- Professionalism — punctuality, consistency, and pride in your work
- Collaboration — working well with others is a must
