About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI):
The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction.

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $102,024.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Oversee the Company Compliance Division, which includes the Accident & Health, Property & Casualty, Long-Term Care, Indiana State Health Insurance Assistance Program, and Actuarial Services teams
Monitor all regulations, rules, and guidance regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
Oversee the ACA filing season in Indiana, including but not limited to, rate and form filings, key filing dates, and
Review state and federal legislation that may impact Indiana insurance markets
Identify and monitor issues or trends that may impact Indiana insurance markets
Keep leadership apprised of issues or trends that may impact Indiana insurance markets
Oversee and complete ad hoc projects as assigned by leadership
Participate and represent Indiana in NAIC committees, task forces, and working groups
Travel to NAIC meetings or conferences
Assist the state-based exchange Executive Director in establishing the Indiana state-based exchange
Reviews and evaluates organizational effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning and makes recommendations for improvement;
Develops and coordinates plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision and expectations of agency or program;
Supervises subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload, and delegating assignments, training, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action;
Communicates with news and other media and responds to media questions or requests in an appropriate public relations manner;
Coordinates with other government officials on planning issues (i.e. federal and/or state agency directors, etc.);
Sets expectations, measures progress, provides ongoing feedback, and evaluates the performance of employees. Ensures work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

Extensive knowledge about the ACA, including but not limited to, rules, regulations, and guidance
Ensure accuracy and pay extensive attention to detail
Clear and concise written and oral communication
Ability to develop and/or measure program outcomes.
Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with key public and private government and business leaders.
Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.
Ability to work with internal and external customers to assess needs, provide assistance, resolve problems, and satisfy expectations.
Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.
Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions. perceives the impact and implications of decisions.
Ability to identify problems. determine accuracy and relevance of information. use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

A degree from an accredited college or university is not required but is highly preferred. Experience in reviewing and implementing the Affordable Care Act also is highly preferred. Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
