Full Job Description

Journey Design Build is seeking a Part-Time Construction Estimator to support our design-build practice. This is a primarily remote position for a Los Angeles-based estimator, supporting residential and commercial projects throughout the Los Angeles area, with required jobsite visits as needed.

As a true design-build firm, our estimating process is closely tied to both architectural documentation and actual construction. We are looking for someone with significant estimating and field experience who can build realistic project budgets, thoroughly review subcontractor bids, and understand how estimated costs ultimately compare to real-world construction costs.

The ideal candidate will be based in the Los Angeles area and able to travel to project jobsites as needed. While much of the estimating work can be performed remotely, this role requires in-person jobsite visits to review field conditions and work directly with the project team.

Responsibilities

Review architectural, structural, civil, MEP, landscape, and consultant drawings to develop complete construction scopes.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and prepare estimates by trade and scope.
Develop realistic labor, material, and subcontractor budgets based on actual construction means and methods.
Solicit, review, and level subcontractor bids against the permit and construction documents.
Identify exclusions, missing scope, allowances, overlaps, drawing conflicts, and potential change-order exposure.
Compare subcontractor proposals and clearly communicate scope and pricing differences.
Review details, specifications, and field conditions that may impact cost.
Visit jobsites throughout the Los Angeles area to review existing and active construction conditions that may impact cost.
Support value engineering and pricing of alternate materials, assemblies, and construction approaches.
Compare estimated costs against subcontract awards, change orders, and final project costs to improve future estimating accuracy.
Communicate directly with project managers, architects, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to clarify scope and pricing.
Participate in jobsite walks and other in-person project activities as needed.

Qualifications

Significant professional construction estimating experience required.
Field construction experience required.
Must be based in the Los Angeles area and able to travel to local jobsites as needed.
Must be comfortable conducting jobsite visits and evaluating field conditions in person.
Experience estimating projects that progressed through construction and comparing projected costs against actual final costs.
Strong understanding of construction means, methods, sequencing, and trade coordination.
Ability to thoroughly read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings.
Strong experience reviewing and leveling subcontractor bids.
Strong quantity takeoff and cost-analysis skills.
Ability to identify scope gaps, incomplete information, and potential cost exposure before work is awarded.
Familiarity with Los Angeles/California construction practices, permitting, building requirements, labor costs, and subcontractor pricing is strongly preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Highly organized, proactive, persistent, and detail-oriented.
Comfortable questioning assumptions and following through until scope and pricing are clearly understood.
Able to work independently in a primarily remote environment while maintaining regular communication with the project team.

Schedule: Flexible, based on estimating and project workload, with jobsite visits scheduled as needed
Compensation: $30–$40 per hour, depending on experience and level of independence

We are looking for someone who understands that a good estimate is more than a spreadsheet. The right candidate should be able to read the documents, understand how the work will actually be built, recognize when a subcontractor bid is incomplete or unrealistic, and help establish project budgets that remain reliable through construction.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
