Position Description:
The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track position in Actuarial Science at the rank of Assistant Professor starting August 18, 2027.
Applicants must complete a Ph.D. in Actuarial Science or a related area prior to August 18, 2027. Candidates must be free to assume the duties of this position and be legally able to work in the United States on that date. Excellent communication skills are essential. Associateship or Fellowship with the Society of Actuaries, the Casualty Actuarial Society, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK), or the Actuaries Institute of Australia is strongly preferred. A competitive startup package will be offered.

Opportunities abound for interdisciplinary research in actuarial science, finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, medicine and public health, environmental sciences, engineering, law and justice, and other areas.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has identified the Actuarial Science program as an area of growth, and it is invested in developing the program. The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science currently has 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 2 instructional-track faculty. The actuarial program at the University of Iowa is the second oldest in the U.S.A. The Society of Actuaries has designated it as a Center of Actuarial Excellence (CAE). The Ph.D. degree is offered in statistics, with concentration areas in actuarial science/financial mathematics, biostatistics, data science, and probability/mathematical statistics; the M.S. degrees are offered in actuarial science, data science, and statistics; and the B.S. degrees are offered in actuarial science, data science, and statistics. Research interests of current faculty in Actuarial Science include risk theory, ruin theory, credit risk, cyber risk and cyber insurance, financial networks and systemic risk, risk sharing, peer-to-peer insurance, information asymmetry in insurance markets, statistical inference of risk measures, and dependence modeling. Research interests of current faculty in Statistics include modern computational statistics, statistical genetics, spatial statistics, Bayesian inference, time series, categorical data analysis, bioinformatics, analysis of medical images, data visualization, statistical learning. The Department maintains both Linux and Windows computer networks and has invested in the University’s high performance computing cluster (http://hpc.uiowa.edu). Education Requirement:
Candidates must hold a PhD in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences or closely related field at the time of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications:
Record of scholarly publication in leading academic journal(s).
