The Farm Laborer plays a hands-on role in the day-to-day operation of ULWR's farming activities, working directly in the field to operate equipment, maintain irrigation systems, and support the field and transportation management teams. This position requires someone who is comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, can operate a variety of farm equipment safely, and is dependable, physically capable, and willing to take direction while also working independently when needed. This is a seasonal, first-shift position (6:00 AM – 2:00 PM) ideal for someone who enjoys physical, outdoor work and wants to contribute to a growing business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate farming equipment safely and efficiently, including tractors, drag hoses, and irrigation equipment.
- Take direction from the transportation and field managers to ensure the proper fields are addressed accurately and in a timely fashion.
- Assist with the routine and preventive maintenance of farm equipment and machinery, and promptly report any mechanical issues or safety concerns.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and general upkeep of farm facilities, buildings, and equipment storage areas.
- Monitor irrigation and drag hose operations to ensure proper, timely water distribution across assigned fields.
- Assist with the loading, unloading, and transport of materials, supplies, and equipment between farm sites.
- Participate in strategic planning processes and company meetings, providing field-level input and feedback.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures when operating equipment, handling materials, and working in and around moving machinery.
- Communicate clearly with team members, managers, and other staff regarding field conditions, equipment status, and daily progress.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management to support farm and business operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; relevant hands-on experience will also be considered.
- Basic knowledge of agricultural practices and farm equipment operation.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and adapt to a seasonal work schedule.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to successfully complete a background check and any other pre-employment screening required by the company.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Prior experience operating tractors, irrigation systems, or similar farm machinery.
- Prior experience performing basic equipment maintenance or repair.
- Familiarity with seasonal farming cycles, crop management, or related agricultural operations.
- Prior experience working in a team-based, outdoor, physically demanding environment.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, squat, climb, carry, and use hands to operate equipment and machinery for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 75 lbs. frequently, and in excess of 75 lbs. infrequently.
- Regular exposure to weather elements, including rain, snow, heat, and cold, depending on the season.
- Regular exposure to unpleasant odors, mud, grease, dirt, grime, wet floors and/or fields, and machinery noise.
- Must be able to maintain focus and awareness of surroundings at all times while working with and around moving equipment.
- Ability to react quickly and use sound judgment when responding to changing field, weather, or equipment conditions.
- Ability to maintain composure and attention to detail during physically demanding and repetitive tasks.
Working Environment:
- Work is performed primarily outdoors on farm sites, with year-round exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
- Exposure to farm machinery such as tractors, wagons, gators, balers, and pick-up trucks.
- Exposure to road and field hazards when operating equipment and driving to and from different farming sites.
- Seasonal, first-shift schedule: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
- Fast-paced, physically active environment that requires flexibility, teamwork, and coordination with field and transportation managers.
