Full Job Description

Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our finance team. In this role, you will support core accounting functions, help maintain accurate financial records, and contribute to timely reporting in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). The ideal candidate is proactive, analytical, and interested in developing experience in both corporate and governmental accounting environments. New graduates are welcome to apply.

First 90 Days (Success Checkpoints)

The checkpoints below outline what success looks like as you ramp into the role.

· ✓ Complete onboarding, systems access, and required training; understand key accounting policies and month-end timelines.

· ✓ Learn the chart of accounts and recurring journal entries; prepare and post assigned entries with appropriate support.

· ✓ Complete assigned balance sheet reconciliations with clear tie-outs, variance explanations, and on-time submission.

· ✓ Support one full month-end close cycle for assigned areas and incorporate feedback to improve accuracy and efficiency.

· ✓ Understand inventory transaction flows and controls; assist with inventory-to-GL reconciliations and document key drivers of changes.

· ✓ Participate in a cycle count/physical inventory activity (as scheduled) and help investigate and document significant variances.

· ✓ Build effective working relationships with Operations, AP/AR, Payroll, and Finance; communicate issues early and propose solutions.

· ✓ Demonstrate ownership and continuous learning by identifying at least one process improvement opportunity.

Duties

Prepare and record journal entries, ensuring accuracy in double-entry bookkeeping and adherence to accounting standards.
Perform account reconciliations for the general ledger, balance sheet, accounts payable, and accounts receivable to ensure data integrity.

· Process payroll accurately and on time using the Company’s payroll system(s); coordinate with HR as needed and maintain appropriate documentation.

Assist with budgeting activities and provide support for financial planning initiatives.

· Support inventory accounting activities, including maintaining accurate inventory records and reconciling inventory balances to the general ledger.

· Assist with month-end inventory close activities, including reviewing inventory transactions, accruals, and adjustments for completeness and accuracy.

· Partner with Operations to support cycle counts and physical inventories; investigate variances and document root causes and corrective actions.

· Monitor inventory valuation (e.g., standard cost or weighted average, as applicable) and assist with reserves for obsolete or slow-moving inventory.

· Prepare inventory-related schedules and analyses to support management reporting, audits, and trend reviews.

· Assist with tax and governmental reporting support by organizing financial data, preparing schedules, and maintaining documentation.

· Enter and maintain financial data in accounting systems and spreadsheets; ensure supporting documentation is complete and organized.

· If applicable, support nonprofit/grant accounting activities, such as grant tracking, allowable cost documentation, and basic fund reporting.

· Perform other related duties as assigned; responsibilities may evolve based on business needs.

Skills

Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and governmental accounting standards.

· Growth mindset and willingness to learn; takes ownership and seeks continuous improvement.

· Proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, PeopleSoft, Workday, or similar platforms).

· Experience with payroll systems such as Paychex or UltiPro (preferred).

· Experience with account reconciliations and account analysis (balance sheet and income statement) and familiarity with core accounting processes (AP/AR, journal entries, and general ledger).

Excellent math skills with high accuracy in data entry and double-entry bookkeeping practices.

· Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret financial data; familiarity with basic tax concepts is a plus.

· Effective communication skills for collaborating across departments and supporting audit processes.

Preferred Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

· Internship or 1+ years of accounting experience (general ledger, AP/AR, or payroll).

· Exposure to inventory accounting concepts (inventory reconciliation, cycle counts/physical inventory, inventory adjustments).

· Experience with an ERP system (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, or similar).

· Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookup functions, and basic data analysis).

· Progress toward CPA or CMA certification.
