Full Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The core duties of the Crisis Line Counselor are to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment to deliver Phone and/or Chat/Text support services to individuals who call the 988 Lifeline or other lines we operate and provide skillful crisis counseling, suicide risk assessment, support suicide intervention when needed, and appropriate referrals to other services and resources.

We are hiring for full-time, on-site Counselors only. There are multiple positions available on First, Second and Third shifts. Shift differentials are included for evening, overnight and weekend hours.

We are hiring multiple Counselors for the next training group. The start date for training is Monday, September 14th.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

- Answers calls and/or chats/texts on incoming lines with compassion, in accordance with the organization’s training and scope*

- Engages in and completes federal, state, and SPCS ongoing required training which provides the skills necessary to support callers on the crisis line*

- Shows proficiency with all phone equipment, computer technology and software used by SPCS, in support of the caller*

- Utilizes reputable outside resources to refer the caller to additional support services in the community*

- Maintains appropriate documentation of each interaction with the caller through well- written, timely, and informative reports*

- Participates in SPCS meetings, workshops, networking events, elective continuing education offerings and SPCS social and community events, as appropriate

- Attends Crisis Line Counselor Training Meetings (in-person and virtual)

- Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationships with other staff and volunteers at SPCS

- Attends supervision/debriefing meeting with management, as scheduled*

- Signs and abides by all aspects of the Crisis Line Counselor Guidebook, as part of the Job Description*

- Assists in maintaining a clean, safe, and confidential workspace

- Performs additional responsibilities as they develop and are assigned

This position requires working some holidays and some weekends.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

- Strong empathy, active listening, communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills

- Excellent phone skills including a speaking voice that is clear and articulate

- Function autonomously and exercise good judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in a crisis situation

- Excellent listening skills

- Excellent attention to detail

- Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment

- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software

- Technologically savvy; ability to conduct basic troubleshooting when necessary

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

- A sense of responsibility and commitment to SPCS and its mission

- High energy, patience, and controlling one’s emotions, as well as the ability to think analytically in a high-stress environment

- Accountability and dependability regarding work schedule

- Understanding of personal wellness

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

- Completion of secondary education

- One to two years related to community involvement

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

- Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a phone and computer
