Full Job Description

JOB Position SummaryAs a Court Officer, transport prisoners to and from jail, attend arraignments and other court proceedings, serve as court bailiff, serve bench warrants/making arrests, and providing general security for the court and staff. In the Collections capacity, review files and tickets on individuals delinquent in Court payments, locate individuals and make payment arrangements. 1. Transports inmates to and from the county jail utilizing handcuffs, shackles and other restraints as appropriate. Maintains security of prisoners in court. Escorts prisoners to other areas of the court as appropriate.

2. Attends arraignments and other court proceedings as requested. Maintains arraignment log and lists basic case information, and assists in updating court files by entering information in to the computer. Generates new notices, bond documents, and other documents as needed.

3. Serves as bailiff for the court as requested. Escorts jurors to jury room and courtroom and provides for the security of jurors.

4. Maintains and operates courtroom virtual video equipment.

5. Works with the probation department providing assistance for the community service program and other areas as requested.

6. Provides general security for the court and staff. Maintains vigilance in courtrooms and hallways and attempts to defuse or prevent confrontations. Assists in security for high profile cases by clearing the hallways or implementing other security measures.

7. Locates and retrieves files needed for court and maintains security of files. Ensures delivery of files to proper division of the court.

8. Assists the public by giving information on court procedures and general directions.

9. Serves bench warrants and makes arrests as requested.

10. Administers drug tests and sends to lab as needed.

11. Monitors pay or serve orders to make sure payment is made or weekend is served in jail.

12. Updates JIS by disposing cases, entering fines and costs, amending charges, dismissing charges, producing nolle’s and acquittals, correcting abstracts and clearing suspensions.

13. Coordinates MDOC video arraignments and conferences and coordinates with jail facilities regarding transport of inmates needed for court.

14. Monitors probable cause conferences between lodged defendants and their attorneys.

15. Locates delinquent individuals and contacts them by letter and/or telephone to initiate collection efforts.

16. Conducts interviews and offers guidance to delinquent persons.

17. Contacts individuals delinquent on fines or costs to collect outstanding fines and costs owed to the court. Reviews accounts and income, collects information on employer, reviews payment obligations.

18. Reviews computer generated reports of payment records and contacts individuals to learn of reason for delinquency and attempts to get payment.

19. Initiates enforcement on delinquent payers and conducts show causes on individuals or people who are in arrears on their payments or have not paid fines and costs.

20. Assists other staff on a temporary basis as requested.

21. Posts daily court docket.

Other Functions

22. Produces driving records, criminal history and judicial data warehouse records as requested.

23. Escorts witnesses/victims to their vehicles for safety purposes when requested.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, with some advanced coursework in law enforcement and criminal justice. Associate's Degree in related area preferred.

Experience: Two to three years of experience in a court, police agency or other related area as a law enforcement officer or in a security capacity preferred or completion of Basic District Court Bailiff Training within 1 year of hire.

Other Requirements: Valid Michigan Drivers’ License. Ability to be deputized. Ability to be certified in the following: Taser, LEIN, and PBT. MCOLES certification preferred. Certified Electronic Operator preferred.
