Reports To: Dance Program Manager
Schedule: 2–5+ hours per week, primarily weekday evenings (September–May)
Compensation: $20–$35/hour, based on experience, availability, and overall fit
Position Overview
Jackson School of the Arts is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ballet Instructor to join our dance faculty. This position focuses on teaching intermediate and advanced ballet students, including pointe instruction, while fostering strong technical foundations, artistic expression, musicality, and a lifelong appreciation for ballet.
The ideal candidate is passionate about classical ballet training, committed to proper technique and injury prevention, and excited to help students grow both as dancers and artists.
This position requires a commitment for the full September–May program year.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction: Teach intermediate and advanced ballet classes, including pointe classes, using age-appropriate and progressive training methods
- Curriculum Development: Plan and implement structured lessons that emphasize proper technique, alignment, strength, flexibility, artistry, and performance quality
- Technique Training: Demonstrate and break down ballet movements while providing individualized corrections and feedback
- Student Development: Support dancers in building confidence, discipline, musicality, and technical proficiency
- Injury Prevention: Incorporate conditioning, strengthening, and flexibility exercises that support healthy dance training
- Performance Preparation: Prepare students for recitals, performances, auditions, and other dance opportunities throughout the program year
- Classroom Management: Maintain a positive, disciplined, and supportive learning environment that reflects the values of Jackson School of the Arts
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with dance faculty and staff to support the overall success of the dance program
Qualifications
Required:
- Extensive training in classical ballet with strong knowledge of ballet pedagogy and technique
- Experience teaching intermediate and advanced ballet students
- Experience teaching pointe safely and appropriately
- Strong understanding of anatomy, injury prevention, and dancer conditioning
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills
- Ability to create a positive, structured, and inspiring learning environment
Preferred:
- Experience preparing students for performances, auditions, competitions, or examinations
- Experience working with students of varying learning styles and abilities
- Experience in a nonprofit, community arts, or mission-driven organization
Additional Teaching Opportunities
While the primary focus of this position is teaching intermediate and advanced ballet and pointe, applicants who are qualified to teach additional dance styles are encouraged to indicate those areas of expertise in their application. Additional teaching opportunities may be available; however, ballet instruction will remain the primary responsibility of this role.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and demonstrate movement for extended periods
- Ability to safely demonstrate ballet technique and movement combinations
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs as needed for classroom and performance activities
