Full Job Description

Job Overview

We are seeking experienced Registered Nurses to join our nationwide survey team supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs State Veterans Home (SVH) Survey Program.

RN Surveyors perform independent regulatory surveys of State Veterans Homes to evaluate compliance with applicable federal regulations governing nursing home care. Survey activities include annual surveys, recognition surveys, and for-cause investigations conducted in accordance with Title 38 CFR Part 51 and survey processes modeled after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Surveyors work as members of multidisciplinary teams that may include nursing home administrators, life safety surveyors, social workers, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

Conduct onsite surveys of State Veterans Homes throughout the United States.
Review clinical records and resident documentation.
Evaluate resident assessments, care planning, and quality of care.
Interview residents, family members, administrators, and staff.
Observe resident care and nursing practices.
Identify deficient practices and document findings.
Prepare detailed written survey reports.
Participate in entrance conferences, daily team meetings, and exit conferences.
Maintain objectivity and professional independence throughout the survey process.
Protect confidential resident information in accordance with HIPAA and federal privacy requirements.
Travel nationwide to assigned survey locations.

Minimum Qualifications

Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in at least one U.S. state or territory.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Minimum five (5) years of recent nursing experience.
Minimum three (3) years of experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, or geriatric nursing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency using Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems.
Ability to travel extensively, including overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with one or more of the following are strongly encouraged to apply:

Former CMS or State Survey Agency Nurse Surveyor
Former Director of Nursing (DON)
Former Assistant Director of Nursing
Former MDS Coordinator
Experience conducting regulatory surveys
Knowledge of CMS Conditions of Participation
Experience with MDS 3.0 and Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI)
Experience with Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI)
Experience investigating complaints or deficiencies
Long-term care leadership experience
Survey certification or regulatory compliance experience
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Minimum five (5) years of recent nursing experience.
Minimum three (3) years of experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, or geriatric nursing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
