Engineering & Maintenance Manager
Position Overview
The Engineering and Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading all engineering, maintenance, reliability, and continuous improvement activities within a heavy manufacturing facility. This role oversees the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of production equipment, plant infrastructure, and maintenance systems while supporting operational objectives through strategic planning, asset management, and capital project execution.
Reporting to plant leadership, the Engineering and Maintenance Manager works closely with operations, quality, and supply chain teams to improve equipment performance, reduce downtime, optimize manufacturing processes, and drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout the facility.
Key Responsibilities

Lead all engineering and maintenance activities to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations.

Develop and implement maintenance strategies focused on preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, equipment reliability, and asset utilization.

Establish, maintain, and continuously improve maintenance systems, work order processes, and equipment history tracking through CMMS platforms.

Manage maintenance planning and scheduling to maximize uptime and minimize unplanned equipment failures.

Monitor maintenance inventories, spare parts availability, and equipment support resources while controlling costs.

Lead, mentor, and develop engineering, maintenance, and technical staff to ensure strong performance, skill development, and succession planning.

Coordinate maintenance activities with production teams to support operational requirements and minimize production disruptions.

Evaluate equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, throughput, quality, and cost efficiency.

Track and improve key maintenance and reliability metrics including asset utilization, maintenance costs, PM compliance, schedule compliance, and downtime reduction.

Direct and enforce maintenance safety programs while ensuring compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Lead manufacturing engineering and continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, quality, safety, and operational excellence.

Develop new manufacturing methods or improve existing processes to meet production, quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Plan, prioritize, budget, and execute capital projects, facility upgrades, and equipment improvement initiatives.

Oversee equipment specification, vendor selection, procurement, installation, commissioning, and acceptance activities.

Manage vendor performance and ensure contractors meet project schedules, quality requirements, and safety expectations.

Lead efforts to reduce scrap, improve quality performance, and support overall business improvement goals.

Collaborate with operations, quality, engineering, and supply chain teams to drive plant performance and continuous improvement.

Support hiring, training, performance management, employee development, and workforce planning for engineering and maintenance personnel.

Provide leadership support during off-hours and weekends as required to maintain plant performance.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.

Minimum of 5 years of engineering, maintenance, or manufacturing leadership experience within a heavy manufacturing environment.

Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment reliability, and maintenance best practices.

Experience managing maintenance operations including preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, planning, scheduling, and reliability programs.

Hands-on experience supporting electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.

Experience with CMMS or Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems.

Proven ability to manage capital projects, equipment installations, and facility improvement programs.

Strong understanding of manufacturing KPIs, maintenance metrics, and continuous improvement methodologies.

Demonstrated leadership experience managing both salaried and hourly technical personnel.

Strong project management, budgeting, and resource planning skills.

Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Proven ability to drive operational improvements, reduce downtime, and improve manufacturing performance.
