Full Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Social Media & Content Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution of the Museum of Science & History's digital storytelling strategy across all social media platforms. This role manages the full content lifecycle, from planning and production through publishing, community engagement, analytics, and optimization.

Working closely with the Director of Development Operations and cross-functional teams, this position develops compelling photo, video, and written content that brings the Museum's stories and mission to life. The ideal candidate is an organized and creative storyteller with experience producing engaging digital content, video and photo editing, managing editorial calendars, and executing multi-platform social media campaigns.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGY AND EXECUTION:

Manage the Museum's day-to-day social media presence across all platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts.
Develop, maintain, and execute a comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual content calendar aligned with organizational priorities, digital education programming, outreach events, partnerships, project leadership, and capital campaign initiatives.
Schedule, publish, and manage all social media content through Sprout Social, ensuring timely execution and adherence to brand standards.
Monitor publishing schedules, optimize posting times, and coordinate content approvals with Director of Development Operations and necessary internal stakeholders.
Maintain consistency in brand voice, visual identity, and messaging across all digital platforms.

CONTENT CREATION AND PRODUCTION:

Capture high-quality photography and video during Museum programs, events, donor and BOT highlights, community outreach activities, partner collaborations, and behind-the-scenes project moments.
Produce engaging short-form and long-form video content for social media, digital campaigns, website, and marketing initiatives.
Edit video content to brand and creative standards, incorporating graphics, captions, animations, and platform-specific formatting.
Manage music licensing and ensure all digital content complies with copyright, licensing, and platform requirements.
Coordinate content requests from departments across the Museum and prioritize production schedules.
Assist in developing creative concepts, storyboards, and content series that showcase the Museum's mission, impact, and grant compliance specifications.

CAMPAIGN AND COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT:

Execute integrated social media campaigns supporting educational programs, education outreach, fundraising, relevant and timely education content, capital campaign milestones, special events with a focus of growing a national audience and increasing engagement.
Engage with audiences by responding to comments, direct messages, and community conversations in a timely and professional manner. Work with Director of Development Operations to develop approved responses for frequently asked questions.
Monitor social trends and identify opportunities to participate in relevant conversations while maintaining alignment with the Museum's brand.
Build relationships with community partners, influencers, and collaborators to amplify Museum content.
Conduct ongoing research of peer museums, cultural institutions, and mission-driven organizations to identify industry best practices, emerging social media trends, audience engagement strategies, and opportunities to strengthen the Museum's digital presence.

ANALYTICS AND REPORTING

Monitor platform performance and audience engagement through Sprout Social and native analytics tools.
Prepare monthly performance reports highlighting audience growth, engagement, content performance, campaign outcomes, and strategic recommendations.
Analyze trends and recommend adjustments to improve content effectiveness and audience reach.
Provide weekly campaign performance tracking against organizational goals and identify opportunities for optimization.

COLLABORATION:

Partner with marketing, development, education, executive leadership, and external agencies to support institutional communications.
Assist with content needs for email marketing, website updates, digital advertising, and other marketing initiatives as needed.
Maintain organized digital asset libraries, ensuring photos, videos, and creative files are properly cataloged and accessible.
Stay informed on evolving social media trends, platform updates, digital storytelling techniques, and emerging technologies to continuously improve the Museum's digital presence.
Coordinate, schedule, and manage all content collaborations with internal departments, community partners, sponsors, creators, and external stakeholders to ensure timely production and execution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, Public Relations, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
2-3 years in social media content creation and execution
Strong photography and videography skills, including capturing content in live event environments
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop), Canva, CapCut, or comparable creative software
Demonstrated experience editing short-form video optimized for tailored social media platforms
Excellent copywriting, storytelling, and communication skills with strong attention to detail.
Proficiency in managing social media and email/SMS platforms (Sprout Social, Constant Contact, or equivalent)
Understanding of social media analytics, audience insights, and digital marketing best practices
Ability to work evenings and weekends (as needed) to support Museum events and special programming
Passion for science, history, education, museums, and community engagement is highly preferred
Experience managing influencer collaborations and creator partnerships
Familiarity with Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, and digital advertising platforms
Knowledge of digital accessibility standards and best practices for inclusive content creation

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Strong operational awareness including familiarity with project management tools and the ability to track progress
Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously
Able to understand and execute complex instructions
Must be able to establish, monitor and meet timelines
Must work well under pressure with demonstrated ability to juggle tasks, prioritize and manage multiple competing deadlines
Ability to maintain confidentiality is required
Digital fluency with social media strategy and digital engagement

TIME COMMITMENTS:

Hours are generally Monday-Friday, between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but flexibility is required. Some weekends and evenings may be required. This role will have a hybrid schedule.
