About Sunshine Recreation:

Sunshine Recreation believes everyone deserves access to lifelong recreation in a safe, supportive, and welcoming community. We provide inclusive, affordable recreation day programs for adults with disabilities that promote healthy lifestyles, independence, creativity, and meaningful social connections.

Position Summary:

As a Recreation Program Assistant, you will work alongside the Program Director, a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, to facilitate engaging recreation programs for adults with disabilities. You will help create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment while encouraging participants to build confidence, develop friendships, stay active, and enjoy meaningful leisure experiences.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in therapeutic recreation, special education, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or other human service fields.

Job Responsibilities:

Supervise and support adults with disabilities while ensuring their health, safety, and well-being.
Assist with leading recreation activities including adaptive fitness, games, arts and crafts, nature walks, community outings, educational activities, and special events.
Encourage participant engagement, independence, and social interaction.
Adapt activities to meet individual abilities and support participants in achieving success.
Maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment for all participants.
Communicate effectively with the Program Director, participants, caregivers, volunteers, and fellow staff.
Assist with setting up, cleaning up, and organizing program supplies and equipment.
Complete incident reports and other documentation as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Participant Support:

Depending on participant needs, responsibilities may also include:

Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), including toileting, changing briefs, hygiene, and feeding.
Assisting participants who use wheelchairs, including safe transfers when trained.
Supporting participants experiencing behavioral challenges using respectful, positive approaches.
Providing one-on-one assistance while preserving each participant’s dignity, independence, and choice.

Required Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years old.
Ability to pass a background check.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Dependable, positive, and able to work as part of a team.
Ability to remain calm, use sound judgment, and solve problems effectively.
Ability to participate in recreational activities and assist participants throughout the program day.
CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).

Desired Qualifications:

Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Experience in recreation, education, camps, day programs, healthcare, or other human services.
Coursework or experience in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or a related field.

Schedule:

This is a part-time position with approximately 6–15 hours per week, depending on availability and program needs.

A paid staff training will be held before summer session starts, the Program Director will work with you to schedule once hired.

Summer Session: July 29 – September 11, 2026. Sunshine Recreation operates on a quarterly schedule, with participants enrolling in seasonal program sessions. Following the summer session, there will be a short break before our Fall Session begins in October.Programs are held weekly on:

Wednesdays: Riverside Church on Park and King Staff Shift: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Fridays: Happy Brew (San Marco) Staff Shift: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This is an ongoing part-time position, not a seasonal role. Employees who are in good standing are encouraged to continue working during future program sessions. As Sunshine Recreation grows, additional program days, locations, and work hours may become available.
