GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB: The Equipment Operator I is a skilled work position in the operation of
specialized trucks, and other gasoline or diesel powered equipment. The individual in this position reports
to the appropriate Crew Leader. Work is reviewed in progress and through observation of results obtained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Maintains and services equipment such as walk around, checking oil, checking tire pressure, changing oil and filters, changing tires, etc.
Performs snow removal in the winter.
Completes weekly time sheets.
Handles the responsibility for work area safety such as placement of signs, etc.
Performs crack sealing.
Interacts with property owners and the general public.
Repairs storm damage to roads as needed.
Maintains drainage and ditch lines.
Shovels and cleans culverts.
Reports road hazards to supervisor.
Performs traffic control.
Removal of dead animals on the roads and right of ways.
Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as timesheets, equipment maintenance report, daily inspection sheets, project work order sheets, etc.
Refers to equipment maintenance manuals, policy and procedure manuals.
Operates a variety of the following pieces of equipment such as a dump truck, skid steer, mini excavator, rubber tire loader, roller, etc. And has some knowledge of other equipment.
Ability to load materials such as rock, shot rock and salt on to dump truck with a rubber tire loader.
Uses a variety of tools such as a concrete saw, chain saw, shovel, rake, mechanic tools, carpenter tools, asphalt/concrete tools, broom, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as dirt, pipe, concrete/asphalt, salt, lumber, cold mix, hot mix, fuel, road materials, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Crew Leader, Assistant Road Superintendent, Road Superintendent, co-workers, contractors, Scale Operators, businesses, truck drivers, and the general public.
Performs other related duties as needed or assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented with one to two years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence, time sheets, and maintenance checks. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to the public, supervisors, and other employees of Cole County Public Works Department.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Candidates for this position must possess, at a minimum, a valid class A commercial driver’s license with air brakes as issued by the State of Missouri.
