Pay range: $89,880 - $146,055 / year

To plan, implement, direct and evaluate the implementation and maintenance of laboratory computer related technologies and informatics support for assigned laboratory areas within the UAB Health System: Lab Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, Outpatient Testing and multiple community/remote labs. To direct informatics support for clinical lab-related functions, strategic planning, asset management for IT needs, lab outreach, Lab Medicine, Anatomic Pathology, and Blood Bank IT support. To organize and direct new technological, clinical enhancement projects. To serve as the liaison with multidisciplinary end-users of laboratory information. To ensure the highest standards of quality and regulatory, accrediting and licensing standards. To manage IT-related subordinate personnel. To adhere to all governing policies applicable to laboratory standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Assumes operational responsibility of assigned IT-related area(s). In collaboration with departmental leadership, supports vision, goals and objectives for assigned area(s) of responsibility. Participates in the development of strategic plans for LIS that align with UAB Medicine objectives. Collaborates with faculty, physicians, nurses and other disciplines in order to ensure efficient and effective operations. Develops policies and procedures that are consistent with the mission, vision and values of UAB Medicine. Plans and directs programs and activities. Provides leadership and direction for IT needs within Hospital Labs.

Directs the laboratory informatics function. Manages all departmental projects for lab information requested by users. Serves as the liaison between internal users of information (physicians and staff) and external customers (Health Department) regarding laboratory flow of information including, but not limited to, research reports, utilization reports and new technology projects. Serves as administrator for all laboratory IT- related systems and/or databases. Ensures that technology, systems and processes are in place to meet demand for flow of quality laboratory information and patient results.

Directs the installation of new lab systems, system upgrades, testing and interfaces. Develops proposals; determines hardware/software requirements; involved in equipment and system installations, testing, training and implementation of new system or upgrade to existing system; evaluates post-implementation; ensures issues are appropriately resolved. Ensures the appropriate interface of clinical information and automated systems, including but not limited to, the electronic health record (EHR). Directs the daily operations of all laboratory information systems ensuring that data is easily and readily available for use. Stays abreast of developments in laboratory informatics and systems across UAB Medicine, including health system lab interfaces and tests.

Directs the testing, training, communication and follow-up of all Cerner code upgrades and corresponding down times. Oversees all changes in LabSource data maintenance and Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) for electronic medical records. Supervises training for users involved in registering, creating lab encounters and receiving lab orders.

Directs assigned personnel and human resources activities including, but not limited to, interviewing, staff selection, training, evaluating, and disciplining. Ensures effective utilization and skill mix of staff in order to meet patient care, lab team’s needs, and customer service demands.

Evaluates and monitors activities, resources, programs and/or services in assigned area(s) of responsibility to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies (The Joint Commission (TJC), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) as well as internal standards. Collaborates with hospital, department and area leadership to implement changes as needed to address quality concerns around Lab IT needs.

Resolves patient, employee, physician and any other personnel or process related issue in a timely manner. Manages trend trackers and communicates responses in a timely manner.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Medical Informatics, Business, Mathematics, Medical Technology or related field and seven (7) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. MT (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
