Social Worker/ Senior Advocate Counselor

Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) (A NYC Department of Education Program)

Program Description:

The Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) is an evening or late day alternative high school program designed to support over age and under credited students (ages 17–21) in earning a high school diploma. While the program itself does not issue a diploma, it does assist students to fulfil their graduation requirements. The Washington Irving YABC program emphasizes accelerated learning, individualized academic planning, and comprehensive social emotional supports to promote student persistence, attendance, and graduation.

Title: Social Worker/ Senior Advocate Counselor

FLSA Status: Full-Time Non-Exempt

Reports to: Program Director

Basic Function:

The Social Worker/ Senior Advocate Counselor for a YABC program provides mandated and preventive social work services that address barriers to student learning, attendance, and engagement. The Social Worker/ Senior Advocate Counselor supports students’ social emotional wellness, crisis response, family engagement, daily outreach to students and management of a caseload.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Student Social‑Emotional & Mental Health Services

Provide individual and group counseling for YABC students addressing emotional regulation, anxiety, trauma, depression, conflict, attendance challenges, and life transitions.
Develop, implement, and monitor intervention plans aligned with students’ academic goals and graduation benchmarks.
Provide crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, and mandated reporting duties.
Collaborate with guidance staff and Collage and Career Counselor to support post‑secondary planning, workforce readiness, and transition services.
Walkthrough, participation in school activities is required.

2. Attendance Intervention & Student Engagement

Monitor attendance data and identify students at risk of chronic absenteeism or disengagement.
Implement attendance interventions and re‑engagement strategies aligned with DOE attendance policies and WIYABC benchmarks.
Conduct outreach to students and families through phone calls, conferences, and documented outreach efforts.
Support students returning from extended absences, suspension, or discharge by creating reentry and support plans.
Participate in attendance team meetings and contribute to school‑wide retention initiatives.
Carry a caseload of students.

3. Family & Caregiver Engagement

Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and caregivers to ensure consistent communication and coordinated support.
Facilitate conferences with students and families to address social‑emotional, attendance, and behavioral concerns.
Provide families with referrals and guidance related to public benefits, housing instability, healthcare access, mental health services, and legal or employment supports.

4. Community Partnerships & Resource Coordination

Connect students to DOE‑approved and community‑based mental health, social service, workforce, and youth development programs.
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of community resources relevant to opportunity youth.
Collaborate with school leadership to strengthen partnerships that support graduation, employment, and post‑secondary transitions.
Collaborate with administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, and school aides to align academic and social‑emotional interventions.

6. Documentation, Compliance & Accountability

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in ATS, SESIS (as applicable), and other DOE‑approved systems.
Document counseling services, attendance interventions, outreach efforts, and case management activities in accordance with DOE guidelines.
Support program audits, compliance reviews, and administrative reporting related to YABC performance metrics.
Adhere to the NYS Social Work Code of Ethics and DOE policies regarding confidentiality and student records.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited institution.
New York State LMSW licensed
Experience working with adolescents or young adults in school‑based or alternative education settings.
Demonstrated knowledge of trauma‑informed care, crisis response, and attendance intervention strategies.
Strong documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in NYC DOE schools, YABC programs, or transfer/alternative high school settings.
Familiarity with ATS, SESIS, and DOE MTSS frameworks.
Experience supporting over‑age, under‑credited, or system‑impacted youth.
Bilingual proficiency aligned with school community needs – Spanish speaker is a plus.

Work Schedule

1-9pm daily. Friday hours may vary in alignment with WIYABC operational schedules. There may be weekend college or overnight trips.
Occasional flexibility is required for student outreach, meetings, and school events.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range: $68,500- $70,000 based on experience, qualifications and fit.
