Our mission at the Jerome County Planning and Zoning office is to serve our citizens by providing timely and thorough information for development and land use inquiries and projects. Job Summary
This position provides information on general planning and zoning, and other planning related policies and procedures to the public, County staff and representatives of other agencies, while demonstrating reliability and a strong commitment to quality work. The Planning Technician will also receive and process various applications for planning approval and permits generally considered more routine and administrative in nature. The Planning Technician provides administrative and clerical support services such as acting as recording secretary for the Planning and Zoning Commission, taking notes, filing, posting notices, etc. as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist in researching and responding to requests for information from other departments, agencies and the general public-providing basic property information and interpreting the zoning ordinance;
- Receive and process applications for development permits;
- Prepares written reports and correspondence, maintain a variety of records and files, and oversee the maintenance and updating of various County databases, including narrative staff reports, written decisions, public notices and legal advertisements;
- Prepare agendas and meeting minutes;
- Respond to inquiries from the public, contractors, and developers regarding zoning regulations, permit requirements, and land-use policies;
- Maintain accurate records, maps, and databases related to zoning, land use, and planning;
- General office duties;
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Basic map reading skills;
- Knowledge of Microsoft programs;
- Exceptional writing abilities with a strong command of English language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
- Capable of meeting deadlines, performing in-depth research, thinking critically, and working with minimal supervision;
- Proven ability to learn rapidly, apply new knowledge, and maintain long-term understanding;
- Exhibits a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic;
- Must be able to work a minimum of one evening per month.
Preferred Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of planning principles and practices;
- Knowledge of administrative procedures;
- Knowledge of legislative procedures;
- Previous experience or education in urban planning, political science, or public policy.
Preferred Education/Experience
- Formal education culminating in a degree or certification in urban planning, political science, or related public policy fields or;
- Two or more years of consistent administrative experience or;
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities will also be considered.
Physical Requirements
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
- This position requires frequent use of a computer, keyboard and the ability to use office equipment;
- May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in a private office located within the Jerome County Detention Center adjacent to the booking area. The position regularly interacts with detention staff, law enforcement agencies, courts, attorneys, inmates, and the public. Employees work within a secure correctional environment and may occasionally be exposed to loud noise, disruptive behavior, verbal confrontations, emergency situations, infectious diseases, and other conditions associated with detention operations.
