Full Job Description

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Animatronics Lead to oversee the design, fabrication, programming, installation, and maintenance of custom animatronic elements for some of New York City’s most recognizable retail holiday window displays.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys bringing characters, props, and environments to life through mechanical movement, electronics, and creative problem solving. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable in the shop, on-site during installations, and collaborating with designers, fabricators, sculptors, scenic artists, and project managers.

If you’ve ever wanted to build the moving displays that stop thousands of people on Fifth Avenue every holiday season, this is the opportunity.

Responsibilities

Lead the fabrication and assembly of custom animatronic systems from concept through installation.
Design reliable mechanical motion systems using linkages, gears, bearings, belts, chain drives, cams, linear actuators, pneumatics, and servos.
Program and integrate servo motors, stepper motors, DC motors, PLCs, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar control systems.
Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and software issues under demanding production schedules.
Develop motion sequences synchronized with lighting, audio, and interactive effects.
Build serviceable systems capable of operating continuously for extended public display periods.
Create wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and maintenance documentation.
Manage component sourcing, fabrication schedules, and prototype testing.
Supervise fabrication technicians and assist with workload planning.
Ensure projects meet safety standards and client expectations.
Perform overnight installations and maintenance during the holiday season.
Travel as needed for installations and emergency service.

Qualifications

5+ years of professional experience building animatronics, robotics, themed entertainment, museum exhibits, or experiential installations.
Strong mechanical fabrication skills.
Experience with:
Servo motors
Stepper motors
Pneumatic systems
Linear actuators
Motion control programming
PLC or microcontroller platforms
Ability to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
Working knowledge of welding, machining, woodworking, and fabrication shop equipment.
Familiarity with CAD software such as Rhino, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar.
Strong understanding of electrical safety and low-voltage control systems.
Ability to prioritize multiple fast-moving projects simultaneously.
