Mechanical Project Engineer / Project Manager – Industrial Equipment

SPIRAC® is a globally recognized supplier of engineered wastewater solids-handling and material-conveyance equipment. Since 1966, SPIRAC has pioneered shaftless spiral conveyor technology and continues to develop innovative solutions for municipal and industrial applications.

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer / Project Manager – Industrial Equipment to join our Alpharetta, Georgia team. This position is responsible for the engineering and successful execution of custom industrial equipment projects from order through design, fabrication, delivery, installation, startup, and closeout.

The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering capability with project ownership, customer communication, and practical experience delivering engineered-to-order industrial equipment.

Position Tasks & Responsibilities

Review customer specifications, contract drawings, purchase orders, and project requirements; identify technical, commercial, and schedule requirements.
Develop equipment layouts and engineering solutions for custom conveyors and solids-handling systems.
Perform engineering calculations including conveyor capacity, drive sizing, component loading, equipment loads/reactions, and equipment selection.
Provide technical direction to Mechanical Project Designers and review/approve drawings, submittals, BOMs, and fabrication packages.
Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, milestones, and deliverables.
Coordinate customer submittals and approvals, engineering, purchasing, fabrication, shipment, installation, startup, and closeout.
Review vendor proposals, shop drawings, fabrication documents, and purchased components for compliance with project requirements.
Serve as the primary customer and contractor contact for assigned projects; communicate status, drive required decisions, and resolve technical and execution issues.
Identify scope changes, schedule impacts, and additional costs; develop and manage change orders.
Monitor project cost and schedule performance and take corrective action when projects deviate from plan.
Coordinate with fabrication and suppliers to resolve manufacturing issues and maintain quality and project milestones.
Provide technical support for equipment installation, inspection, testing, startup, and commissioning.
Ensure designs and project execution comply with contract requirements, applicable codes and standards, and SPIRAC engineering practices.
Maintain required project documentation and support continuous improvement through standardization, lessons learned, and cost-reduction initiatives.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
Equivalent education combined with significant relevant industrial equipment experience may be considered.

Experience

Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering and project execution experience involving industrial equipment, machinery, material handling, conveyors, or engineered-to-order systems.
Experience managing projects from engineering through fabrication, delivery, installation, and startup.
Demonstrated experience managing schedules, budgets, customers, suppliers, and multiple concurrent projects.
Experience with fabricated mechanical equipment and manufacturing processes.
Conveyor, bulk-material-handling, wastewater, or solids-handling experience preferred.
Candidates with 8+ years of directly relevant experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Technical Skills

Strong mechanical engineering and industrial equipment design fundamentals.
Experience with conveyor calculations, motor/drive sizing, component selection, and material-handling design.
Ability to interpret specifications, contracts, mechanical drawings, and equipment layouts.
Working knowledge of fabrication practices, dimensional tolerancing, equipment loads/reactions, motors, gearboxes, bearings, and industrial drive components.
Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar; Autodesk Inventor preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and project scheduling tools.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, commercial, and decision-making skills.

Office-based engineering and project management combined with visits to fabrication facilities, wastewater treatment plants, construction sites, and customer locations.
Must be able to safely work in industrial and construction environments while wearing required PPE.
Ability and willingness to travel approximately 10–30% based on project requirements.
