Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Travel Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Utilization Review to join our dynamic healthcare team. This role involves providing expert clinical assessment and review of patient cases across various hospital settings, ensuring appropriate utilization of healthcare resources and compliance with health regulations. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in critical care environments, including trauma centers, intensive care units, and emergency departments. This position offers an engaging opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, optimize patient care, and support hospital operations during day and night shifts within a 40-hour workweek in Duluth.

Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive patient assessments, reviewing medical records for appropriateness of care, managing utilization data through electronic health records (EHR), and facilitating discharge planning. The role emphasizes adherence to HIPAA regulations, medical terminology accuracy, and effective communication with healthcare teams to promote optimal patient outcomes. Candidates with a strong background in hospital medicine, post-acute care, and case management will thrive in this position.

**Must have compact RN license and OR License as they are providing remote care to facilities in Oregon. They must also be willing to apply for D.C. licensure upon offer.**

Duties

Perform detailed utilization reviews for diverse patient populations across inpatient and outpatient settings, including medical-surgical, ICU, pediatrics, geriatrics, behavioral health, and emergency medicine.
Collaborate closely with physicians, nurses, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to evaluate the necessity and efficiency of treatments and procedures.
Review diagnostic evaluations, vital signs, physiology data, and medical records to determine appropriate resource utilization.
Manage electronic health records (EHR) systems efficiently to document assessments, decisions, and discharge planning activities.
Ensure compliance with health regulation policies such as HIPAA while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Facilitate discharge planning by coordinating post-acute care services such as hospice or home health when appropriate.
Participate in clinical case management activities to optimize patient flow and resource allocation.
Conduct intake assessments for new cases requiring utilization review or case management services.
Support managed care initiatives by evaluating inpatient stays and outpatient services for medical necessity.
Communicate effectively with clients and healthcare teams to provide clear updates on utilization status and care recommendations.

Qualifications

Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with current state certification.
Extensive critical care experience including ICU, Level I/II trauma center experience preferred.
Proven background in hospital medicine or emergency room settings; PICU experience is advantageous.
Knowledge of health regulation policies such as HIPAA and familiarity with medical terminology.
Strong understanding of acute care practices including infectious disease management, discharge planning, and post-acute care coordination.
Experience working within electronic health records (EHR) systems; proficiency in EMR/EHR management is essential.
Demonstrated ability to assess patients comprehensively through vital signs analysis and physiology understanding.
Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Prior experience in utilization management or case management roles is highly desirable.
Ability to manage multiple cases efficiently while maintaining attention to detail in documentation.
