Full Job Description

Job title: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – Operating Room
Location: Johnson City, NY
Contract Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Evening 5x8 hours (3p-11:30p), or (1p-11:30p)
Schedule: 40 hours/week

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) to join the Operating Room team at UHS Wilson Medical Centre in Johnson City, New York. The Surgical Technologist will play a vital role in supporting surgeons and the OR team by maintaining a sterile environment, preparing surgical equipment and supplies, and assisting throughout surgical procedures.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile technique, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

Prepare the operating room, surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for scheduled procedures.
Maintain strict sterile technique and follow all infection-control policies and procedures.
Perform surgical scrub procedures and maintain aseptic conditions throughout procedures.
Assist surgeons with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments and supplies.
Anticipate the surgeon's needs for instruments, sutures, equipment, and other supplies.
Maintain an organized and sterile operative field.
Perform accurate counts of sponges, needles, instruments, and other surgical items.
Assist with suturing, retracting, suctioning, and other surgical tasks under the direction of the surgeon.
Handle and identify surgical specimens according to facility policies.
Ensure proper care, handling, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
Identify potential safety hazards and communicate concerns to the appropriate OR staff.
Assist with efficient operating room turnover between cases.
Collaborate closely with surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesia staff, and other members of the surgical team.
Participate in rotating call coverage as required.
Support and assist other OR personnel when needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Current NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
Current BLS certification from AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross.
Previous experience working in an Operating Room is preferred.
Strong understanding of sterile technique and infection-control practices.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Proficiency with EPIC is required.
English proficiency: speaking, reading, and writing.

Schedule & Call Requirements

40 hours per week.
Evening shift.
Schedule may include five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts.
Typical shift times may be 3:00 PM–11:30 PM or 1:00 PM–11:30 PM.
Rotating call coverage may be required approximately 1–2 shifts per week, typically 11:30 PM–7:00 AM.
