Mountain States Plastics is a Colorado-based manufacturer of blown film and flexible packaging products serving customers throughout the region. Our extrusion department operates five blown film lines, including multi-layer coextrusion lines producing film for industrial and consumer packaging applications. Work Schedule
This position works a 2-2-3 rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts, alternating between 36 hours one week and 48 hours the following week. Employees work only 14–15 days per month and receive every other Friday–Sunday off as a three-day weekend. Overtime is paid in accordance with Colorado law for the 48-hour workweek.
Position Summary
The Production Technician – Extrusion is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of blown film extrusion lines. This position monitors the extrusion process and film bubble, performs resin and color changes, operates winders and performs roll changes, and verifies product quality against work order specifications. Advancement through our operator levels is tied to demonstrated line capability, from monolayer lines through multi-layer coextrusion. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate blown film extrusion equipment in accordance with established procedures and work order specifications
- Monitor the film bubble, line speed, and process conditions, and make adjustments to maintain stable operation and specified film properties
- Perform roll changes on winders, including doffing, core loading, taping, and web handling to established changeover standards
- Perform resin, additive, and color changes, including loading blenders and hoppers and verifying recipe setup against the work order
- Measure and verify film gauge, width, and layflat using scales, micrometers, and other measuring tools; document results and make corrections as needed
- Support line changeovers, including die, air ring, and sizing changes as assigned
- Pack, label, and palletize finished rolls in accordance with packaging specifications
- Complete production records, quality checks, and setup verification using the company's digital work order system
- Handle scrap and regrind material in accordance with established procedures
- Perform housekeeping duties and routine cleaning of equipment and work areas
- Report equipment malfunctions, quality concerns, and unsafe conditions to management immediately
- Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including required use of personal protective equipment and safe practices around heated equipment and moving webs
- Participate in cross-training across extrusion lines and processes
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Prior manufacturing, machine operation, plastics processing, or extrusion experience a plus; not required — training provided
- Demonstrated reliability and consistent attendance
- Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, procedures, and safety documentation
- Ability to perform basic math and accurately use measuring tools (tape measure, scale, micrometer, calipers)
- Willingness to work around heated equipment and to learn process troubleshooting
- Forklift experience a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for the duration of the shift
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and climb stairs or platforms in the performance of duties
- Ability to work in a production environment with elevated temperatures near extrusion equipment
- Ability to respond to audible alarms and equipment sounds
