POSITION TITLE: Plant Maintenance Manager
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- The Plant Maintenance Manager reports to the Vice President of Operations
- The Maintenance Technician(s) and Janitorial Staff report to the Plant Maintenance Manager
- This position has a coordinating role with the Procurement Department’s MRO buyer
JOB OVERVIEW. GapVax has created this position to address the increased maintenance needs of a growing company. The Plant Maintenance Manager leads maintenance personnel and oversees the preventive maintenance, upkeep, and repair of plant tooling, equipment, assets and facilities. The primary goal is to maximize operational efficiency, minimize unplanned equipment downtime, and ensure a safe work environment. This is a hybrid “player-coach” role involving both managing the department and doing actual, hands-on work.
EMPHASIS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICAL EXPERIENCE. GapVax is seeking a candidate with a strong industrial electrical background including the ability to use electrical schematics and technical documentation to troubleshoot and a working knowledge of various industrial electrical systems (480V 3-Phase, 220V single phase, 208V single and 3-Phase, 110V and 24V control voltages), switchgears, transformers, motor starters, VFD’s. Familiarity with PLCs and HMIs is a plus.
WORKING HOURS. This is a full-time, salaried exempt position. The standard hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Given the nature of a manufacturing environment, maintaining operational uptime is critical. The Plant Maintenance Manager is expected to adjust their schedule to support urgent facility repairs, major equipment breakdowns, or critical weekend projects that cannot be completed during normal production shifts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise maintenance staff, operations, and processes including preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs. Directly perform preventive maintenance and repairs when workload and/or specialized skills require it. Ensure that Maintenance Department office and storage areas are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
- Hire, train and manage maintenance technicians. Assign daily tasks and monitor completion. Conduct performance evaluations. Ensure technicians have the equipment-specific training they need. Evaluate manpower/workload/skills and make hiring recommendations based on facts and data.
- Preventive/Planned Maintenance: Prioritize, assign, and track the completion of preventive/planned maintenance tasks. Coordinate with production managers to minimize impact of planned maintenance on production.
- Emergency Maintenance/Repair: Respond to down equipment with sense of urgency. See repairs through to completion to restore production. Conduct root cause analysis of emergency repairs to update preventive maintenance plan to prevent recurrence.
- Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure OSHA compliance. Enforce Lock-Out/Tag-Out procedures. Keep the facility audit-ready. Assist production managers to resolve discrepancies identified in safety walkthroughs. Work with outside agencies and management to complete required stormwater and air quality inspections.
- Coordination of Outside Maintenance Contractors and Equipment Suppliers. GapVax uses several outside contractors to conduct specialized maintenance, for example, fire suppression systems, air compressors, forklift PMs, crane inspections. GapVax also relies on equipment OEMs and their dealers for parts/service advice and specialized repairs. The Plant Maintenance Manager will act as the single point of contact for outside contractors; negotiate supplier contracts (with assistance from the MRO buyer); and coordinate on-site efforts.
- Tool Issue. Manage tool issue of company supplied tools.
- Implementation of CMMS and Use of Technology. GapVax currently maintains a master list of equipment and associated preventive maintenance requirements in Excel. This spreadsheet is used to schedule maintenance but does not track cost. GapVax has concluded that this is no longer adequate and that the company should implement a CMMS system. The Plant Maintenance Manager will play a key role in the selection, implementation, maintenance and use of the CMMS system and drive adoption among technicians who may resist digital tools.
NOTE: The following three duties will be supported by a CMMS system.
- Equipment Documentation. Currently, operating manuals, maintenance manuals, parts lists, etc. are a mixture of paper and digital format. Ensure the proper organization of paper documentation and digitize where possible. Working with Engineering, develop schematics to document the plant electrical distribution system and utility maps.
- Budget, Inventory & Cost Control. Recommend repair vs. replace decisions based on data not gut instinct. Balance expediting costs vs. downtime decisions. Track maintenance and repair cost per asset. Ensure that PMs are documented and repair part usage is logged. Maintain an inventory of equipment-specific spare parts.
- Asset Strategy and Use of Technology: Maintain a complete asset registry. Update registry when equipment is added or removed. Track condition, failure history, and remaining useful life. Assist senior management in CapEx planning.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field preferred. Equivalent trade school with extensive hands-on experience considered.
- 5-10 years in an industrial plant/facilities maintenance role
- 2-5 years in a management or supervisory role
- 2-5 years of direct industrial electrical experience
- Experience with CMMS systems
- Familiarity with typical welding and fabrication equipment: Plasma tables, Press brakes, Rolls, Welding machines, Shears, Saws, Ironworkers, etc.
