The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Southcoast Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking to fill our Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex position located in Juneau to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
Base Salary Information:
Engineering Assistant 1: $35.45 / per hour (OT Eligible)
Engineering Assistant 2: $40.86 / per hour (OT Eligible)
Engineering Assistant 3: $46.71 / per hour (OT Eligible)
What you will be doing:

Engineering Assistant 1: Under the immediate supervision of a higher level engineer/architect and a lead (project engineer), the Engineering Assistant 1 performs a variety of entry/ trainee level professional engineering duties. The main purpose of the Engineering Assistant 1 position is training and development towards becoming a Project Engineer, the department’s representative responsible for all aspects of onsite administration of a construction project. Within the first twelve months as an Engineering Assistant 1 the position has worked on at least one active construction project and demonstrates competence in some of the primary work activities as outlined in the training plan and developed the knowledge, skills, and abilities for advancement to Engineering Assistant 2.
Engineering Assistant 2: Under general supervision of a higher level engineer/architect and a lead (project engineer), the Engineering Assistant 2 performs a variety of basic engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted and standard engineering practices. Duties include serving as Project Engineer for low or medium-level complexity construction projects and Assistant Project Engineer on more complex construction projects.
Engineering Assistant 3: Functions as a Project Engineer, the Department`s designated representative for construction contract administration, responsible for the inspection, acceptance and payment of work performed on one or more ongoing construction projects of average to above average complexity. Acts in a Lead capacity to subordinate Engineering Assistants and Engineering Technicians.

This Juneau-based position works within a small collaborative team with a broad range of experience, from entry level to 25 plus years of practice and expertise in highways, airports, bridges, construction, public engagement, etc.

This position requires occasional travel to project sites within the coastal region of Alaska (several trips during Spring/Summer/Fall). This may include flying to remote communities in small aircraft with infrequent need for overnight stays with minimal accommodations. Includes site inspections which can occur in adverse weather conditions.

ENGINEERING ASSISTANT 1:
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
Special Note:
An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.
ENGINEERING ASSISTANT 2:
Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
ENGINEERING ASSISTANT 3:
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, or Engineering Assistant 2, or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
