Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Allegan, MI | $80,000 to $100,000 per year

A growing employee-owned systems integrator and panel builder in West Michigan is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join its engineering team. The company designs, builds, and installs manual and automated control systems for industrial processes, with offices in Allegan on the Kalamazoo River. This is a mid-level position with clear progression paths into senior engineering, systems architecture, or senior systems engineering roles based on interest and performance.

Schedule
Full-time, onsite in Allegan, MI.

Compensation
$80,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on experience.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will design instrumentation and control systems in support of customer projects and internal engineering activities. You will specify components and software from a range of manufacturers to meet project specifications and produce Industrial Control Panel designs that comply with UL 508A and UL 698 requirements. Obtaining and maintaining certification as a UL Manufacturer Technical Representative (MTR) is a core expectation of the role.

You will collaborate closely with the drafting department to bring designs to completion and will be responsible for preparing component and design submittals, technical documentation, and operation and maintenance manuals. The position also includes participation in proposal activities such as specification reviews and the preparation of estimates, conducted under the direction of senior engineering staff.

Required Qualifications

Experience working with integrated process systems or electrical control systems
Industrial Control Panel design experience (required)
Working knowledge of electrical principles and instrumentation and measurement fundamentals
Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, or demonstrated ability to gain proficiency quickly
Strong critical thinking and reasoning skills
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and to stand, sit, crouch, or work in other positions for extended periods
Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working in a UL 508A panel shop or with a systems integrator
Familiarity with NFPA 70 (NEC) and industrial automation standards
Experience with PLCs, HMIs, or SCADA systems
Exposure to hazardous location (UL 698) panel design
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
