As a Field Service Heavy Equipment Mechanic with Balkema Excavating, you’ll travel between company facilities, gravel pits, and construction job sites to diagnose, repair, and maintain the equipment that keeps our operations moving. What You'll Do
- Travel to company facilities, gravel pits, and construction job sites in a company-provided service truck
- Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy equipment in the field
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled service on heavy equipment
- Repair and maintain equipment from a variety of manufacturers, including Caterpillar (CAT), John Deere, Komatsu, and other heavy equipment brands
- Troubleshoot diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, drivetrains, and related components
- Read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic information
- Complete work orders and maintenance documentation accurately and in a timely manner
- Maintain service truck inventory, tools, and equipment
- Communicate equipment status and repair recommendations with supervisors and equipment operators
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform emergency field repairs when needed
- Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and MSHA requirements
What You Need
- Experience as a heavy equipment mechanic performing diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment components
- Ability to diagnose and repair equipment independently in field conditions
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening and participate in company testing programs
- Ability to obtain and maintain required MSHA training
- Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, truck traffic, and active mining and construction operations
Preferred
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred. Company-sponsored CDL training may be available for qualified candidates.
- Experience in aggregate mining, excavation, construction, or other industrial environments
- Experience repairing Caterpillar (CAT), John Deere, Komatsu, or similar heavy equipment
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience using computerized diagnostic software and equipment

Work Environment
- Daily travel between company facilities, gravel pits, and construction job sites
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Exposure to dust, mud, noise, moving equipment, and truck traffic
- Frequent climbing on and under heavy equipment
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to approximately 50 pounds independently. Safely move heavier equipment and components using lifting devices, mechanical assistance, or team lifting techniques as needed.
- Required use of PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, high-visibility apparel, gloves, and steel-toe boots
