Full Job Description

The City of Overland Park has a full-time Court Security Officer position available in the Municipal Court Department.

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides security and protection to employees and citizens in the courtrooms, lobby, public hallways and all office areas of the Municipal Court. Ensures proper decorum, conduct and behavior that is compliant with the Overland Park Municipal Code. Operates the Weapon Screening equipment. Manages prisoner video arraignment and transportation of prisoners as required. Arrests and detains persons as ordered by the judge; coordinates confinement with Johnson County Adult Detention Facilities. Serves as courtroom bailiff as necessary. Completes and distributes all required paperwork and forms.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct physical security to all persons present in courtrooms and in the Municipal Court common areas. Provides security and protection to employees in the Municipal Court and Court Services offices. Ensures proper conduct and appropriate behavior. As a Law Enforcement Officer, provides enforcement of the law within the boundaries of assigned work area.
Serves as the court bailiff by calling the docket, announcing the judge and ensuring proper courtroom decorum.
Arrests, detains and transports prisoners as ordered by the judge. Coordinates confinement with Johnson County Adult Detention facilities. Takes appropriate warrant action on persons who are present in the court facility. Communicates with outside agencies to confirm active warrant status.
Operates the Weapon Screening equipment at the court entrance to ensure compliance with appropriate Judicial Orders, City ordinances and state laws.
Coordinates and manages the video arraignment process for in-custody prisoners from Johnson County Adult Detention confinement facilities. Provide in-person assistance at Johnson County Adult Detention Center as required. Completes all required paperwork for the same.
Completes criminal history record checks on defendants as needed/requested.
Obtains and completes fingerprints on defendants as required.
Exhibits safe and appropriate care and use of firearms. Completes required training and qualifying procedures through the Overland Park Police Department. Understands and reviews all applicable Court Administrative Orders and Police Standard Operating Procedures. Utilizes response to resistance strategies during duty situations as necessary and in compliance with Response to Resistance Standard Operating Procedure.
Interacts with other agencies as required.
Transports traffic tickets, Notices to Appear and any other documents from police stations to the court clerk, as necessary.
Performs radio communications effectively with fellow officers, supervisors, dispatch, etc.
Responds to onsite medical emergencies and contacts appropriate agencies as needed.
Performs any other duties as requested by supervisor, chain of command, department leadership and/or Judges including any duties required during an emergency or incident response.
The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals). The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.

Requirements:

EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:

Must be a certified Law Enforcement Officer or have been a certified Law Enforcement Officer in good standing within the past five years.
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record.
Must be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age.
No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
Must successfully pass a polygraph exam and police background check prior to employment.
Associates Degree or 60+ credit hours toward degree program strongly preferred.
Must complete Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training within 12 months of employment and maintain current certification throughout employment.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of six months experience, as a certified law enforcement officer. One year experience, preferred.

None.
