POSITION SUMMARY - United Ways of Kansas State Director

About Us

United Ways of Kansas (UWKS) strengthens and unifies the statewide United Way network so local organizations can better serve their communities. Through collaboration, advocacy, strategic partnerships, and shared resources, UWKS helps local United Ways increase their impact across rural, suburban, and urban Kansas. The organization works closely with member United Ways, public agencies, funders, and community partners to advance solutions that improve lives statewide. As State Director, you will help shape the future of one of Kansas’ most trusted nonprofit networks.

Responsibilities

Lead day-to-day operations of United Ways of Kansas while advancing the Board’s strategic priorities and statewide mission.
Build strong relationships with local United Way leaders and boards, providing support, onboarding, professional development, and connections to key resources.
Develop and lead statewide advocacy and public policy efforts, including legislative engagement, testimony coordination, and communication on issues affecting Kansas communities.
Cultivate partnerships with United Way Worldwide, nonprofits, businesses, foundations, and government agencies to expand statewide impact.
Secure and manage funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, contracts, and other revenue sources that support organizational sustainability.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business, communications, public policy, or a related field preferred; equivalent leadership experience will also be considered.
5+ years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, association management, government relations, community development, or a related field.
Experience in fundraising, grant writing, sponsorship development, or broader resource development.
Strong written, verbal, and public speaking skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence diverse stakeholders.
Ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout Kansas, including attendance in Topeka during the legislative session.

The State Director will help turn statewide collaboration into measurable community impact.

Work Environment

Remote position based in Kansas
Frequent travel throughout the state required
Regular attendance in Topeka during the Kansas Legislative Session expected
Occasional evening and weekend meetings, conferences, and events
