Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
Hospital pharmacy is responsible for providing pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve quality of patient care. The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the operation of pharmacy services, including strategic planning, day-to-day operations, pharmaceutical care, clinical and distributive services, financial management, responsibility, and personnel management. The Director serves as a role model for innovative thinking and focusing on quality work.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Strategic Planning
-
Develop and approve pharmacy services policies and procedures.
-
Review and update the hospital formulary on a timely basis.
-
Monitor compliance with legal and regulatory requirements for pharmacy operations and with standards of practice from accrediting agencies, Pharmacy board, KDHE regulations, KDADS regulations and other regulatory agencies.

Develop an organizational structure with clearly defined lines of authority and job responsibilities that enable employees to work together toward common objectives.

Train healthcare team on medication management and effective utilization of pharmaceutical technology.

Integrate pharmacy services with other hospital departments and medical staff to establish a multidisciplinary approach to improving patient care.

Develop, justify, lead, and manage pharmacy programs and services to improve patient care.

Design and maintain a medication distribution system that provides checks and balances to minimize risk of adverse outcomes.
Clinical Operations:
-
Actively collaborate with treatment teams to monitor patient medication therapies that ensure optimal clinical outcomes.

Monitor patient medication therapy for incompatibility, contraindications, polypharmacy, and optimal dosing.
-
Accurately fill prescriptions and dispense medications from the pharmacy.

Deliver medications to treatment staff for patient care.

Manage formulary and inventory to ensure medications are readily available and accessible.

Resolve operational problems that impact effectiveness of pharmacy services.

Collect data for department’s quality improvement initiative.
-
Detect and document adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
-
Review medication variances and error, recommend determination of standards of care, and submit three audit reports on a timely basis.

Serve on hospital committees and task forces as requested. Submit agendas to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee recorder at least the day before scheduled meetings.

Evaluate and teach pharmacy students when available.

Provide education to medical and nursing staff regarding new medications, policies and updates in delivery of pharmacy services.
Personnel Management:
-
Establish appropriate staffing levels and positions to achieve departmental and hospital objections. Collaborate with Human Resources in the recruitment of pharmacy staff.

Communicate clearly with pharmacy staff regarding new policies, changes and rationale of these changes with pharmacy staff to enhance their understanding of these policies and changes; encourage their feedback and recommendations on improving delivery of pharmacy services. Discuss changes and updates with pharmacy staff before these are shared with other disciplines and implemented.

Schedule pharmacy personnel to optimize access to pharmacy services, including daytime, after hours, weekend and holiday back up scheduling.

Approve position descriptions and performance standards for pharmacy staff.
Financial Management:
-
Monitor and allocate resources within the pharmacy services operations budget.

Expend funds consistent with pharmacy services budget.
-
Seek innovative ways to reduce/contain costs and ensure quality services with medical staff.
Competency and Licensure:
-
Maintain pharmacist licensure, pharmacy licensure. Complete all hospital training requirements in a timely manner such as the hospital wide training, annual EXPO training, and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training. Monitor required training of pharmacy staff to ensure they are current.
Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

BS or Pharm D from an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy

Current pharmacy license in good standing with the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy

Unrestricted Driver’s license.
Preferred Requirements:
-
Previous hospital experience with psychiatric patients.
-
Previous hospital management experience.
-
Experience with psychiatric medications.
-
Experience with TJC survey participation.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
-
Must be able to pass a background check prior to employment.

Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.
