The Carpenter Apprentice assists experienced carpenters and jobsite leaders with commercial refrigeration and HVAC/R construction projects while learning the carpentry trade through hands-on training. This role supports the building, installation, remodeling, and repair of structural and finish components required for refrigeration system installation in new construction and renovation environments. Work is performed under supervision and in accordance with union agreements, OSHA standards, project specifications, and applicable building codes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist journeyman carpenters with commercial refrigeration and mechanical construction projects, including layout, framing, blocking, curbs, platforms, enclosures, and equipment supports.
- Learn to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and work orders to support accurate installation and layout.
- Measure, cut, fasten, and assemble wood, metal, and related materials under supervision using approved methods and safe work practices.
- Support construction and modification of structural elements needed to accommodate refrigeration equipment, piping, ductwork, electrical conduit, and control systems.
- Assist with installation of anchors, sleeves, access panels, equipment pads, and protective housings as directed by project specifications and mechanical plans.
- Handle, organize, and stage materials, tools, and equipment to support jobsite productivity and safe workflow.
- Coordinate and communicate with journeyman carpenters, foremen, refrigeration technicians, electricians, pipefitters, and other union trades as directed.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and jobsite conditions in compliance with union, company, and safety standards.
- Demonstrate professional jobsite conduct, willingness to learn, and reliable attendance in accordance with company and union expectations.
- Comply with all OSHA regulations, local building codes, environmental policies, and project-specific safety requirements.
Skills, Training, and Qualifications
- Enrollment in, eligibility for, or willingness to enter a recognized carpenter apprenticeship program, as applicable.
- Basic understanding of construction practices, measuring, layout, and safe tool use preferred.
- Ability and willingness to learn to safely and accurately use hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
- Ability to follow instructions, ask questions when clarification is needed, and work productively as part of a crew.
- Previous construction, carpentry, HVAC/R, or mechanical systems experience preferred but not required.
- Commitment to jobsite safety, quality workmanship, punctuality, and skill development consistent with union expectations.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, stoop, and perform manual tasks throughout the workday.
- Must be capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment up to 75 lbs.
- Work may occur indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions, noise levels, and construction environments.
- Potential exposure to construction‑related hazards and materials consistent with commercial jobsite conditions.
