Full Job Description

Position: Lead Mechanical Engineer – Downhole Tools
Location: Houston, Texas (On‐site)

About the Role

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer in our Downhole Tools group, you’ll lead the design, analysis, and optimization of advanced downhole completions and intervention tools used in oil and gas well operations. You will apply deep technical expertise in mechanical engineering principles, failure analysis, and materials selection to develop reliable, high‑performance tools that operate under extreme downhole conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership: Serve as the subject‐matter expert for mechanical design of downhole tools (e.g., packers, subs, shifting tools, and retrievable systems).
Concept Development: Lead ideation sessions and feasibility studies; translate customer requirements into detailed mechanical concepts and design specifications.
Design & Analysis: Perform 3D CAD modeling, FEA (stress, thermal, and fatigue), CFD where applicable, and tolerance stack‐up analyses to ensure robust tool performance.
Materials & Manufacturing: Select appropriate alloys, coatings, and composites; collaborate with suppliers to qualify materials and manufacturing processes (CNC machining, additive manufacturing, forging, heat treatment).
Prototype & Testing: Oversee prototype fabrication, pressure and temperature testing, mechanical cycling tests, and full‑scale downhole tool qualification programs.
Reliability & Failure Investigation: Lead root‑cause analysis of field failures, implement design modifications, and document corrective actions to enhance tool reliability.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Work closely with R&D, manufacturing, quality, field operations, and commercial teams to ensure seamless product hand‑off from design through deployment.
Mentorship & Development: Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers, review technical deliverables, and foster continuous improvement in engineering practices and standards.
Documentation & Compliance: Author and review engineering documents—specifications, calculation packages, FMEA, P&ID updates—and ensure designs comply with API, ISO, and client specifications.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field).
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mechanical design engineering, with at least 7 years focusing on downhole oilfield tools or pressure‐containing equipment.
Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or NX) and FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, or similar).
Deep understanding of downhole operating environments: high pressures (up to 20,000 psi), high temperatures (up to 500 °F), corrosion, and wear conditions.
Strong materials knowledge: metallurgy, elastomers, coatings, and corrosion‐resistant alloys.
Proven track record of bringing multiple downhole tool products from concept through field deployment.
Excellent problem‐solving skills and familiarity with root‐cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 8D, Ishikawa diagrams).
Effective communicator with strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Demonstrated leadership and mentorship abilities; experience leading multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on pressure‑vessel design, tribology, or related specialty.
Knowledge of downhole telemetry, smart completions, or autonomous tool systems.
Experience with coating technologies (e.g., PVD, CVD, elastomer dual‐durometer).
Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean).
Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification.
